Television Picture Squashed In At Side

    I’d appreciate some advice.

Recently I rescanned my TVand Humax hdr-fox t2 box. If I’m watching the TV with the signal coming in via the Humax the smaller stations are squashed in at the side, however, if the signal is coming in via my television then the picture is full screen.

I've turned the Humax completely off, disconneced the plug, and let the set idle for a few moments but that didn't help.

Picture quality is excellent wherever the signal is coming from.

Any suggestions as to what is going on here and how I might fix the problem.

Which 'smaller' channels? What programme is on?

Viva, True Etertainment, and a number of others.
It happens on ALL the programs new programs, old programs - the lot.

What about the film that's on Viva now, is it 'squashed'?

Give specific examples of programmes: they don't have to be old to be 4:3 aspect ratio.

Today at 9:45am I tuned into the following stations with these results:

Channels 1 - 5 as expected no problem either through my Humax Box of TV (The TV is a Sony Bravia)

A percular thing though was that Channel 4 +1 had bars when viewed via the Humax Box, none with the TV

ITV 4 Humax Bars, TV OK showing Magnum PI

Movie Mix showing Lucy OK on both Humax and TV

That was just a random sample. If you need any more I'll certainly have a
    look.

RTE 1 - TG4 OK all round. Though I'm been constantly told to rescan. Still that's another issue for another post.

As always many thanks for any help offered.

You may had set your Sony TV to Wide or Full aspect instead of Normal or Auto aspect
Saorview is not transmitting any aspect flags that I can see but Freeview does.
As for Magium PI on ITV4 is in 4:3, this is the data from Freeview EIT

Magnum is from the 1980s. Channel 4 +1 had a US show from 1998/99. The black bars are the 'OK' condition & the TV is getting it wrong.

If you dislike the way the Humax is displaying programmes, you will have to change aspect ratio settings somewhere. Did you do a 'factory reset' on the Humax or the TV at any point?

You already have a thread running on the rescan issue: http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?p=87461093

Just delete the channels that are telling you to rescan.

As Peter says, the black bars are the ok condition.

I have this Humax STB, with the display resolution set to 1080i.

To set aspect ratios go to menu>settings>preferences>video. Then choose screen ratio and pick either 16:9 or 4:3.

If set to 16:9, in the display format menu you can choose auto, pillarbox or zoom. I have this set to pillarbox. This should ensure that material originally shot in 4:3 is displayed correctly.

The only thing to note here is that the above settings are fine with UK channels. RTE1 HD and RTE2 HD on Saorview are currently not displaying 4:3 material properly, i.e. pillarboxing.
