What is Meetup.com really like?

Anyone have any good/bad experiences with Meetup.com events? I only found out last week it even existed and having browsed some of the events, about 50% of them seem to be a thinly veiled other form of internet dating, the other half really surfs the spectrum, from after work dancing through to hiking, home cinema nights and dining out. So whats it really like, is it full of strange people who need to get laid or could it be a genuine way to get a few more hobbies?

Could you not just some clubs or whatever in area instead of running the risk of a dog sniffing out your corpse in a remote woods in 6 months time?

Nope it's not at all like that. Have been to a few things / outings. I don't personally think it portrays itself like that have to say. I'm sure there is focused Single's Groups as such on there. But by-and-large I think they tend to stay as far away as possible from that so as not to be associated with being a Dating set-up. From what I have seen people are a complete mixed-bag lol attached folk included. All's I can say is to give it a try. :)

I've started yoga classes through it recently and a book club. I also used to meet up with a group of people in Dublin to speaky dee Spanish when I lived there temporarily back in 2009. Everyone there only seemed interested in practising their Spanish and meeting some new people and there was no funny business at all or else it was all going on behind my back!

Thumbs up from me all round!
