Hi, I might be relocating to the north for 6-12 months with work.

I was thinking of selling my car and buying a UK reg car, however I am not sure what complications I will have when I move back down to the Southern office 12 months later... would I still be subject to VRT.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

I think you have to own the car in the UK for 2 years to be VRT exempt and if you are exempt you cannot sell the car over here for at least 12 months after registering it here.

Pretty sure you only need to have owned and used the car abroad for 6 months to qualify for transfer of residence exemption.

You need to have owned the car for six months prior to your transfer of residency. You also need to prove you were a resident, so bills payslips with a NI address. And keep all your diesel receipts.

Thanks all, I will probably be still getting paid in Euro into my Irish bank account but will be living in the north and will most certainly have fuel receipts etc...

You're not entitled to bring a car back VRT free as you'll never really have moved, as it was only a short term work assignment and your normal residence will not have changed.

AS fuel, especially diesel, is a little cheaper in the south I'd just fill up at weekends.

Thanks, but if I move away for 6-12months then i am within the 6 month regulation surely...

The 6 month regulation is how long you have to have owned the car, not how long you have to have lived there.

Ok, so if I'm there 12 months, I'll own the car at least 11 months?

Also my normal residence will change... I won't be living in the South???

Have you actually read the Revenue website or just got dodgy advice here?

You do not qualify for relief from VRT

if you went to live abroad primarily for the purpose of pursuing a course of studies
if you were working abroad on a task of duration of less than one year

Also my normal residence will change... I won't be living in the South???

Normal residence is where you call home, not where you stay during the working week. If you have family in the Republic and return there regularly and intend to return there permanently anyway then that remains your normal residence.

Your normal residence will not change. Your normal residense depends on your personal ties. (Read section 135 of the finance act in respect of VRT). Unless your family also moves up north, your personal ties will remain in the south, therefore your "normal residence" will remain in the south. EU rule is that the car you drive, must be registered in the place where you are normally resident.

Thanks guys, i am a single guy in rented accommodation in which i will be moving out of if i do decide to move up north.

So how does this affect my situation... i am not looking for ways around anything but if it is legit i don't see why i shouldn't pursue the option (if it's an option)
