Thought that was a pub story about the cat but a friend had Bord Bia inspection lately......
This man would run a tight ship, inspector was young and picky, couldn't find anything major wrong on livestock.,feed end of things...then just as leaving yard, saw two cats outside....wanted to see if,when and with what they had been dosed with lately!!!!!
Man said politely are you extracting the yellow water?....
So if any of ye get a check give an answer like Fr Ted and the money:).....
'Ah those cats are only passing through and don't belong here'

I often wonder why lads get worried about going down on one or two things. They are only making it harder on the rest of us. I am of the opinion if you only need to pass an exam there is no point in getting an A1 when a C2 is more than adequate. Because of this attitude these people are making it harder and harder on other farmers,

On woodchip it was always going to get expensive as it is an energy source. Now all this waste timber is wanted by wood pellet makers and MDF board making.

Ya I recon you are better off leaving something for the inspector to complain about because he will keep going until he finds something

That actually happened to someone that I know. He was having his Board Bia Inspection and he had everything tip top. But he hadn't any vermin bait stations. When the inspector asked him about them, he replied that the cat took care of all of the mice and rats. the inspector then asked him for the worming record of the cat. He told him that the record was with the Vet. Inspector made him send a copy of it to him!

Actually where do most of yas get bedding for cubicles? Local place near me has bags of chopped rape straw for 6.50, cheaper than Glanbia who charge 10euro for a bag of shavings. Only places that do bulk sawdust etc either wanted to sell me an artic load, or were charging an arm and a leg for delivery of a smaller quantity.

Also, anyone use dried dung? Also called green bedding I think. With a bale of straw being cheap, I'm surprised nobody is chopping and bagging that yet?? I'd consider a straw chopper on the back of the tractor, but they are too expensive for the small quantity that I'd need.

Saw at one of our BTAP meetings where the farmer had a small petrol engine straw chopper. You see them in the uk from time to time for less than £300.

I do smaller loads of pure woodchip and I am finding a lot of farmers that was getting recycled woodchip last year looking for proper woodchip now as they were finding staples nails and hinges through it and it was breaking down very quickly.

we found that farmers were saying there is no soakage or drainaige in fresh chip as it just kinda copacted under stock where as recycled chip was a lot dryer and held up better . as for nails etc there should be none whatsoever all our timber went through 2 shredders both with 2 big magnets in them never seen any metal afterwards as for glass all timber is sorted before shredding good timber for chip **** timber for airblock
