Ireland -> UK -> Ireland

    Hello all

    Last year we re-registered our Irish (non-import) car in the UK as we had moved over for what we thought was going to be a few years.

    However, we have decided to return to Ireland at the end of this year. Whilst she's showing her age she is going to have to soldier on for a few more years yet, and she's not getting a new car either!!

    I assume that the car will get its original IE registration back again, and that there will be no VRT payable? This is a genuine transfer of residence.

    Anyone done this recently, anything to watch out for?

    Cheers

    Correct. No VRT, you will be issued with the original registration number again.

    Yes same reg, you need to go to the motor tax office for this.

    Out of interest if a car left with a valid NCT and returned within the same period would it still have a valid NCT?

    I'm in the same boat. Just brought my own back home. Is it the tax office and not ncts? Please post back if you find any more info I'll start looking into it myself next week. I'm hoping there is no extortionate admin fees!

    Ours will have about a month of its original NCT left!

    In terms of the process, does anyone know whether we have to request a VRT exemption from Revenue under transfer of residence, then register the car as per the NCT process, or is there a "shortcut" given that the car was an Irish original?

    Sorry I missed this reply, I've just started looking at it as we move back in mid-December. How did you get on?
