Medical card removal because paid private?

    Hi,

A patient over 70 is on the public waiting list for a skin biopsy. The consultant said the biopsy is urgent. It's a biopsy on the face so a GP won't do it. That was 8 weeks ago and still no date for the biopsy. He can get it done in a private clinic next week at a cost of €900. Someone has offered to pay the €900 on his behalf but the patient is worried that if someone pays the €900 for his biopsy that he will lose his medical card because he used the private system. Are his concerns valid? Could he lose his medical card?

    Thanks

He has no worries at all. Just get the job done, box of choccies for the kind benefactor, and notify the GP beforehand so he knows whats happening and so he/she can take him off the public waiting list and let somebody else take his place.
This is the way forwardin the healthcare system in Ireland at the moment I'm afraid, hoping some kind person will step in and have mercy. :(
