Pretty talented squad, all these lads either turned 24 after Sept 1st or before August 31st in 2014.
I think the age guidelines changed the following year but i'm not sure.
    6 capped internationally.

I find it pretty amazing there are so many people who were deemed good enough to play for Ireland at an underage world cup but who are now not playing the sport at all!

I wouldn't be surprised. It's the age when you finally have to make a decision with what you want to do with your life and some people after spending so long at it will just prioritse something else

I think the drop off in general from U20's to Seniors is fairly big.

    so
    2009 - 6 capped
    2010 - 2 capped
    2011 - 4 capped
    2012 - 3 capped
    2013 - 2 capped

2011 was a good year eh? 4 already capped and there's still the likes of Furlong, Moore, Hanrahan, Marmion etc. Our young talent is definitley improving.

fairly sure nearly all of them were involved with an academy setup but weren't good enough to make the next step.. injuries and other factors come into it..

For example Brian O'Hara was just too small and brittle for professional rugby, another would be Ciaran Ruddock, if he was 6'6 instead of 6'4 he'd still be with Leinster imo.

Don't know much about Moran, Shiels, Burke, Gahan and McGregor.

    A few interesting things there...

The fact that Matt Healy was ahead of Conor Murray at 9.
Obviously that McKinley was ahead of Madigan.

Where would POM have been playing if he was available? And what did happen to O'Hara, I remember thinking he was talented.

    Talented group though.

McKinley would have been a great player, massive loss

    Totally agree, freak injury.

McKinley was always ahead of Madigan back then.

I think the U20 level is overrated in our minds. Of course, it's a good indication of the top talent coming through but, as an overall standard, I don't think it's a great indication or how good people are. The overall standard of an average U20 JWC game wouldn't be much better than an AIL 1A fixture, for me. Those that don't make it, make a career elsewhere and fall to the same traps all of us do, work, family, injury etc.

A huge number of the guys at U20 level don't make it as a professional rugby player. In all truth, out of all those named below, only about 10 or 11 guys have really made careers in professional rugby in Ireland out of a squad of 30 and that's a pretty decent return. Of those guys, only a few have managed to establish themselves as first choice players.

He was a 50 cap international in waiting. A truly fantastic talent. If the injury had never occurred, I genuinely think there'd be no Madigan/Gopperth or Madigan/Jackson argument.

Anyone know what he's doing at the moment? He was an intelligent guy as well being a good rugby player. I remember he was looking at getting involved in coaching.

whats the New Zealand equivalent doing?

Trent Boswell-Wakefield (Hawke’s Bay), Hamish Cochrane (Tasman), Aaron Cruden (Manawatu), Elliot Dixon (Canterbury), Shahn Eru (Wellington), Daniel Faleafa (Auckland), Ma’afu Fia (Manawatu), Zac Guildford (Hawke’s Bay), Bernie Hall (Canterbury), Willie Ioane (Manawatu), Brayden Mitchell (Southland), Brendon O’Connor (Canterbury), Ken Pisi (North Harbour), Buxton Popoali’i (Wellington), Leighton Price (Hawke’s Bay), Robbie Robinson (Southland), Alex Ryan (Southland), Teddy Stanaway (Auckland), Winston Stanley (Auckland), Latu Talakai (Waikato), Shae Tamati (Hawke’s Bay), Tom Taylor (Canterbury), Shaun Treeby (Wellington), Gauefa Tuigamala (North Harbour), Nafi Tuitavake (North Harbour), Frae Wilson (Wellington).

Purely from the top of my head: ABs (Cruden, Guildford, Taylor), Super Rugby (Dixon, Popoali'i, Stanley, Treeby, Robinson).

No doubt many of the others are in the ITM cup scene.

Moore's not listed as he injured himself during the 6nations.

Shane Gahan and Andrew Burke are still playing club rugby.

Burke was the next big thing. Correct me if I'm wrong but I think he played(or was at least involved in the quads of) Irish schools in 4th year and Irish 20s the Summer of 6th year. Must be tough.

Burke was one of the next big things but the pressure, coverage he was getting got to him and he just wanted to play rugby for sake of it. At least he is still playing unlike so many others who give up after few years out of school

that was a particularly strong group of players - put murray, o'connel and o'mahony in that team and you would have a very serious team - hopefully ryan can improve , he was a star player keeping o'mahony out - yet to really fulfill his potential , i know he has been hit with injury.
