I've some footage files (.dv) that I'm trying to finalise here, but I'm running into issues. One file is about 10 minutes, or 2.4GB.

I tried in iMovie, one worked last night, but this morning they seem to fail when trying to use the Share - File. 'The share operation "Theater - fileblahblah" has failed'. I'm trying again now as I write this post, I can see the white progress bar is moving slowly.

FCP X...I have very little experience with this and I'm not even sure when it's clear if the process is finished. Checking background tasks in it, I don't really understand what's accurate, and can't really find anything in Finder, so perhaps I set it up incorrectly. How long might a render take, is it the file size that affect things the most, and RAM? (4GB).

10.9, 2008 iMac. Have searched the web this morning, but am not really clear on finding any answers.

On another note, is there a straight forward way of getting VHS on to a Mac? Searching last night suggested something like iGrabber.

When you say finalise what do you mean? are they on a DVD that isn't finalised? Or are they files that you are trying to compress to a different file type?

If its the latter and If you can open the files in quicktime simply export them as .mov files would be the easiest way.

Finalise, as in, export/last stage of converting to the necessary format. No DVDs involved.

I got sorted, kinda. A bit long winded and a few mistakes along the way.

I attached the VCR to a Win 7 machine, captured the video footage using Power Director, which created .mpeg files (pretty large and too big to bring to work in that form). Transferred those to Mac, changing over the .avi or .mp4 using MPEG Streamclip, which also shrunk them, so now I can bring them into work and play using VLC.

I have a few others that are non-urgent and non-work related. I did try to trim about 30 seconds from one clip using Power Director, then its 'Produce' option to .avi option, but that increased the file size hugely - to about 11GB (2 hours of VHS footage, another came out at nearly 20GB), so there may be a better option there somewhere. I can't easily move these huge ones to Mac, though perhaps if I network it to a Windows PC...

But yeah, if there's VHS to Mac pathway out there it would be good to know. Thanks for your response.
