VW Scirocco, what to look out for?

We are looking to get rid of the polo between now and January for a Scirocco... between an 11 and 13 reg. don't think our budget could stretch to brand new but might be able to get a pre-reg/ demo perhaps. we are looking at the 1.4TSI AND 2.0TDI models with an open mind to both as we do about 300km's per week.

Just wondering really which is the better engine?
are there any common problems with the cars to look out for?
currently doing 300km's per week ish but with a view to keeping the car a minimum of 5 years i'd say and the mileage per week could go up over time so which engine would wear better? i'm asuming the diesel?

edit: also if anyone could recommend any suitable alternatives to the Scirocco. We were also looking at the Megane coupe but i'd fear its really ****.

The 2 litre is crazy money new and it's reflected by the residuals. For 300km a year the saving in running the diesel wont be huge either as the 1.4tsi is economical and has a decent turn of speed for it's size - much more than you'd expect looking at the figures. I'd look for a petrol one. It's basically a Golf so there shouldn't be any suprises either.

Absolutely lovely looking car imo. There is a dark blue around near me and I pine for it every time a pass it. They are so expensive though.

If you're looking in Waterford Farells have an absolutely savage 11 reg diesel. Nicest I've seen. All it needs is Xenons and it would be perfect.

u should have a look at the new seat Leon, I think it's a cracker of a looking car.

Make sure the car you go for has rear parking sensors due to the very limited visibility out the back and wide ar*e. Nicer looking car than bland looking mark 7 golf ?

Is that the 122hp 1.4TSI? I was impressed with that model Scirocco when it was in the family for about a year. In white and was a really lovely looking car. That said, its torque figures were not far off my 90hp 1.9TDI if I remember correctly, my car had about 10 less. I was never convinced that it was all that much faster than my car, okay it is 3 seconds faster to 60 but depending on where you would catch each car in the gears it would be close. I'd go for the 157hp petrol or highest power diesel.

A 3 door Golf. If you're looking at 13's, you'd get the Mk7 Golf, and given the 'rocco is pretty much a Mk5 Golf in a different frock, you'd get a markedly better car for the money.

the scirocco and the golf despite sharing a chassis are visually quite different though. we did look at a couple of mk6 golfs for similar money but i'd rather an 11 r-line scirocco that a 131 baseline golf tbh.

we looked at that alright, the green is quite striking in the flesh in the "photos don't do it justice" kind of way. that said 24k asking is a bit steep for an 11 reg even with the r-line spec dont you think?

thanks for that, but kind of really looking at 3 door coupe styled cars.

we had a look at the astra gtc and hyundai veloster too... both of which are considerably cheaper than the scirocco. for example you could get a brand new 2.0CDTi SRi Astra GTC for less than the 11 reg r-line golf above off the top of my head.

the veloster was impressive too, nice car to look at and nice to be in. a bit **** the way there is only 1 engine in the line up though. also questioning what, if anything, it would be worth in a few years time.

I see that car every morning. The color is nicer in the flesh too. But he has it a good while now so price may be negotiable.

I'd say there has to wriggle room. Only thing is I think it disappeared for a while and then came back. It was 27 or 28k back in Feb when I was looking around but it's very clean bar one small mark on lower lip of the front bumper. Colour is fantastic in the flesh, bet that was 40k+ new.

I went for the GTC after looking at it due to the price, cash price in an Opel dealer up the road is 25k (pics are of mine before its pdi) but it could definitely be had cheaper I'd imagine.

He has another garage in Tramore and stock regularly moves between garages.

Could be it, although anything decent is usually in that one. They do have some nice cars from time to time though.

megane coupe with gtline trim especially in blue is a nice car but might be a bit slow for some peoples' liking.

I dont know about the Scirocco. I think it has really dated. Someone I know bought one and I had a good look at it and wasnt impressed. I dont think the lines gel at all ie appears designed by different people. The petrol would win out a bit on the fun side and would be cheaper Id say.

Can't really fault it so far, engines miles better than the CR170 VRS I had and the chassis is properly sorted - miles better than the standard Astra. You can floor it in 2nd without wheelspin which you couldn't do with the VRS. The only thing I don't like about driving it is the gearbox takes a while to loosen up meaning it can be notchy for the first 10 miles or so in the morning.

The petrol ones drive sweeter, less weight at the front.

Have a 2.0 cdti GTC for over a year now myself. I have to say having tried both GTC and the Scirocco, I'd go for the GTC every time... Joy to drive and at the 165bhp it's a rocket. The only thing that I prefer in the Scirocco is parts of the interior but it's not very suitable if you have 4 passengers.

the megane is a consideration, they are easy on the eye, look great on paper and the price is right but long term are they going to be unreliable as ****?

looks are probably the main thing attracting us towards the scirocco... it certainlt doesn't look like the most up to date coupe on the roads but it looks good, in my opinion.

good to see a few positive reviews on the astra! we liked it a lot, it seems very good for the price and it has a 5 year warranty. unfortunately the one we viewed was the basic spec so it wasn't very exciting and the center console was particularly dull but i feel a higher spec'd model would offer much better.

I wouldn't change my giulietta for the world.

The scirocco always reminds me of a golf that has been squashed.
