I'm going to have a go at remastering some of the older STG OST's in my collection. A chap who's name I forget, has some wonderful FLAC TCS TF remasters available which sound superb compared to the original masters.

Found this fun free app for a quick comparison test.

Check out this spectrograph taken from a WAV directly lifted from my Trizeal Promo OST disc.

Compared with this WAV directly lifted from Hyper Drive G.S.M. SEGA 4 disc 1.

No. I don't know what I'm looking at either. But it looks important and fun. :D

Going to give a remaster a try anyway and see what results I get.

Good Luck, looks like an awful lot of work to me!

Shouldn't be too bad to do, just a bit painstaking but it's going to be worth it I hope!

Reading up on the mastering and remastering process and spectrographs makes it a bit easier to approach the project. We'll see what happens... :)

I use Adobe Audition CS6 for a lot of audio work and find it quite good.

If you're looking to do detailed work and restoration then the spectral frequency workflow in Audition is pretty darn good. Here's a pic of something I'm working on this week using that workflow. It's just the audio from a video I'm creating but the source audio in one section is not fantastic(very old) and I can see that in the spectral frequency(and hopefully fix it).

That's a really interesting project, good luck :)

Do you plan to make the masters available once they are complete? I'd love to have a listen.

Interesting. I haven't used Auditon since it was called Cool Edit. Might give a trial version a go. Although I have a legit Sound Forge Pro so may as well use that seeing as I paid for it! :pac:

    @SEGAMARKIIIRGBLEGENDBLOKE:

My mini studio hardware is currently:

    Micro Korg
    Arturia SparkLE
    NI Maschine Mikro
    Novation Launchkey 49
    Arturia Minilab
    Korg Monotribe w/ Miditribe mod
Rokit 5 G2 monitors (XLR balanced to the interface)
    Saffire 6 audio interface
    Sennheiser HD 598 headphones
    Fiio F9 headphone amp
    Cubase 5

I've a Behringer mic and stand too but want to change that out to a Shure mic I think.

Next hardware I'm looking at is an Arturia Minibrute! :D

Thanks o1s1n. I'd like to think the remasters would be possible to distribute but it depends on if I stand a good chance of getting my collar felt...and if they actually turn out to be any good haha!

The doujin stuff should be fine. Some of it would sound superb with a nice remaster. The commercial stuff probably not, due to copyright etc. Worth investigating though.

Not sure if I'll get round to it til the new year now though. Far too many projects going on right now, plus I've to finish Pink Bullets 2 and start my book project too! :(

Nah, I love the Minibrute, and the Microbrute looks just as awesome! No denying it's a sweet synth though. By the way, I love the Microkorg, it's just loaded with awesome and sounds utterly sexual.

With a thread with the word "Anal" in it, it's a pity we don't have Enternow around......

Yep. An STG book. Maybe. Some foundations laid and spoke to a publisher so we'll see.

Totally and utterly 110% speculative right now though and nothing more than that.

Pink Bullets 2 should be done in time to call it an annual! :P Hopefully the stuff I have tied in to it will all come through, again, we'll see... :)

I started a bit of remastering on a track from an SST album pressed in 1990. Even with some basic tweaks the difference is immediately apparent (obviously subjective).

So far I have only tested it through monitors and headphone monitoring but the difference is clearly there. Bringing out the guitars and drums by widening each band and adding reverb etc. Lots more punch and clarity. It is amazing to hear how narrow and compressed the original recordings sound, although you would likely put that down to the mastering process 'limited' by the equipment available 23 years ago.

The real test will come when played on proper hi fi equipment, which will come later. Enjoying the whole process so far. :)
