    how about this?

    mk2 MR2 - 3SGE engined (Bullet proof)

These are getting cheaper and cheaper by the day - looks fresh enough:

Added bonus being an anniversery model (should have bilstein suspension) - €750

    No mention of NCT/Tax however

FTOs are virtually impossible to insure now.

I own an FTO at the moment, and had an MR2 alongside for a few months…the MR2 is easier to live with on a daily basis cost wise (and comfort wise).

I'd love another MR2, I'd get a turbo one though next time.

MX5's are pretty cool IMO. And constantly getting cheaper.

Are they really hard to insure? What's the reason for that? Are fto's tough on juice?

FTOs are great to run and not bad on petrol.
Insurance is a killer though, full ncb with a full licence 8 years and I gave up my fto because the insurance was 780 third party when my renewal came around, compared to 270 for a clk200 that was 4 years newer.

Parts are beginning to become sparse, well some parts are.

Great car if that doesn't bother you and it will always turn heads, always.

I even had a 1997 2.5 twin turbo putting out 320bhp while I had my fto and that was always cheaper to insure.

Can go wrong with a DC2 Type R Integra if you can find a clean one. Depends on how you define cheap though; youll most likely pay in excess of €3k for a decent one and insurance isnt cheap either.

    OP Define cheap?

Would highly recommend an FTO if you can sort insurance at a reasonable price. I had a 95 GPX manual and it was such a fantastic car, loved driving it. Very reliable too, never had any bother except things that you would expect to go after 15 years such as starter and the notorious idle control valve in the FTO. I had to sell because I was going back to college and couldn't afford the tax, insurance and running costs. I bought a 1.4 Ford Focus and my insurance went down by 700 euro, no exaggeration. The year that I sold it (24 y/o Full licence for 2 years and NCB of 4 years) I was paying ~1200 per year for insurance in the FTO. Went down to ~500 in the Focus :D

Would I do it again? Yep!

The FTO was a beautiful design but with too many of them being 'scangerised', I think it's day has passed.

With the FTO, like the DC2 and so many other Jap cars of that era, if you can find a decent one that is still stock and unmolested then it adds to the beauty these days. As cool as seeing a properly well modified DC2 is, I still prefer to see one that is completely as it was when it left the factory.

I don't know, it's like any skangerised car, a good clean OEM one will always get appreciated.

Yes you are right of course but is there actually an original one left in this country?

This thread has got me looking on DD for another FTO....damn you boards, damn you.

    Plenty of original looking.

You'll be hard pushed to find a factory original as it's out of production over 11 years.

Theres a fair chance that anyone who has a clean FTO, DC2 etc at this stage is hanging onto it.

Tbh if I was serious about getting a car like this again Id strongly consider importing it myself.

My FTO is fairly standard, apart from alloys. As djimi said, most of the decent ones are being held onto.

Haven't seen a 'good' FTO up for sale in a fair while, at least for any sort of realistic price.

I actually think finding a decent FTO in the 'open market' now would be nigh on impossible, based on whats out there at the moment.

Wasn't there a 2 litre turbo version with 197bhp with a sub 7 second 0-60. Surely that would counts as sporty. Although I appreciate that sporty and fast are 2 different things but I wouldn't compare it to a puma

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,237 ✭✭✭✭djimi

Is that Astra really 197bhp? Youd think they would have done something with the styling to make it stand out a bit, wouldnt you?

I had awful issues getting insurance on the FTO after I left Quinn two years ago. I got classic cover last week for €400 including mods.
Given their price has tumbled even further I think it'd be a good choice for a "fun" car to have along side your DD.
Unfortunately that's probably no good to the OP...

I've driven MR2's and MX5's and found them great too.
The 5 wouldn't be as quick as the rest but it still feels nippy
