Whats the usage split between gaming and normal use ?

Your a BF player if I remember my boardsies, playing BF4 on a 1440p will mean lower frame rates and smaller HUDs. If you are buying a monitor for gaming then a 1080 with 120hz or 144hz would be better.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,013 ✭✭✭✭Wonda-Boy

TBH it is mostly gaming, browsing the new and a small bit of photography editing. I built the rig for gaming. I dont mind the lower FPS as I can just buy a GPU to remedy that, but I am confident that the ATi 6990 that I have will deffo give me playable rates with that monitor at that res.

Why would a 1080p 120/144hz monitor be better? I take it that it the refresh rate....the human eye AFAIK can only see 75mhz after that you cant tell the difference. If its purely because my card will struggle then that no probs.

    Thanx for the input m8

According to TFTCentral this uses the exact same PLS panel as the Samsung itself and is much cheaper. (Put LTM270DL02 into the Panel search function)

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/PB278Q-Widescreen-Multimedia-2560x1440-DisplayPort/dp/B009668YPM/ref=sr_1_1?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1384536183&sr=1-1&keywords=Asus+PB278Q

Outside of that I couldn't say I know much about the pros and cons of PLS vs IPS though as I hadn't even heard about PLS until this thread :).

Playing BF with 120hz+ is so very very smooth, I would not go back to 60hz. I just bought a monitor Wednesday after weeks of looking around. I wanted to get a 1440p all along, my friend though has both a 1440p and 1080 120hz monitor so I checked them out. BF on the 1440p is not great, the hud is tiny and while you can turn of AA thats the only benefit. Playing it on the 1080 with fast hz and low response is a much better gaming experience.
So for the best gaming monitors they are 1080's with high refresh times and low response times. For everything else the 1440 is better.

What monitor did you go for in the end? I am purple in the face looking at reviews at this stage

Also if you get a 120hz monitor does that mean you need the hardware to get up around 100+ FPS to take advantage of it? Not too up to speed on the monitor tech TBH.

    Hi,

You dont need to be doing greater than 60fps to get the advantage of 120hz monitors, the gpu can send updates to the screen twice as fast reducing the odds of screen tearing for one. Overall its going to be a lot smoother and our aim will be better.

I was in your situation, I built this PC a month ago and spend more time trying to figure out what to do for a monitor than I did researching the parts. It was the friends dual screen hat convinced me to get a gaming monitor first and down the line a 1440p.
In the end I picked this
    http://www.dabs.ie/products/iiyama-prolite-g2773hs-gaming-monitor-1ms-hdmi-vga---dual-link-dvi-8JS5.html?q=ProLite%20G2773HS%20Gaming%20Monitor%201MS%20HDMI%20VGA%20&%20Dual%20Link%20DVI&src=16

It is cheaper then a lot of gaming monitors leaving me a bit of budget for a 1440p down the line. And its not bad, sound is **** off the native speakers and the stand is cheap looking but at the end of the day the game looks good.

I am using a 7950 and i7 4470K (neither overclocked)and getting 30-50fps on Ultra settings, when i go back to High settings I am getting 60+. But the game regardless of fps is super smooth when its not rubberbanding but thats a BF4 problem not the hardware.

I really wanted to get a BenQ monitor as they have flip a button pre sets and a new monitor coming out this month but impatience got the best of me. They also have a thing where you can use the setting off pro gamers to get the monitor balance just right.

Many thanx for the input, at the end of the day its about gaming and a better overall experience. So I have no probs going with the 120/144hz monitors. Are there any 2560x1440 res 120/144hz monitors out there. If there are they are very hard to find.....

As I said my trouble is that I am coming from a very very good 24" TFT, if I was gaming on some crap monitor I would bite the bullet alot quicker.

Cheers for the links m8 have a good bit of research to do.

Reluctantly, prolly yes. I would love to keep it but that would DEFFO mean getting a more powerful GPU to power both of monitors.

I will send you a link to the review of it Battser....

So basically the 120/140hz monitors have the older and "inferior" panel so to speak. But they are alot more responsive but less colour accuracy and vibrancy. The IPS/PLS panels are better to look at but do not offer the same response times or refresh rates but generally have better or higher res. which would be arkward to say the least playing fast FPS games like BF4.

Really does depend on what you are after. I would love a 120hz with 2560x1440 res and a low response time....just not being made yet.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,013 ✭✭✭✭Wonda-Boy

Right lads need an honest to goodness answer on these two panels, deffo getting either one of these. Which would you prefer?

    Skipped a few posts here.

Just want to give my 2c about 120hz monitors. The guy who said 120hz is better regardless of whether you can get 120fps is wrong. It won't improve your aim. It will do the complete opposite.

If you can't get a solid 120 fps then your frame rate will be variable meaning your sensitivity will also be variable. That means you can't build up the muscle memory required to gain an advantage and improve your aim.

The best thing you can do to improve your aim is to disable mouse acceleration in windows, turn your mouse dpi settings near max and balance that with the windows sensitivity settings. This way you can get both high dpi and controllable mouse movements. Then keep the game at a max frame rate that it won't dip below.

I dont think that is what he said at all, if you have the power in the PC to get anything over 60fps then it will be a bonus. As in the game will look and run alot smoother....which can only be a good thing. Its got nothing to do with improving my aim or stats etc etc I do alright with them in 60hz lol.

Do you have a 120hz monitor or did you read this online? If so what make of monitor is it and how do you find it overall.

Yes you should turn off mouse accel, but you should never mess with the windows sensitivity. It should always stay on 6/11. The lower the dpi = more control not higher.

Can you explain that Burgo? Why should it stay on 6/11?

I upped my mouse dpi and lowered that to 4/11.

Two weeks ago I pretty much asked the same question

    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?p=87338182

Do you know anyone with a 1440p ? In the end seeing one gaming helped make my decision to go for the 120hz solution.
Have you tried reddit ? you might get more answers there.

At 6/11 it you get a 1:1 pixel ratio.

99% sure I will go with this or anything with a similar spec to it. I have had a good look around the net and there are serious issues with the Qnix with backlight bleed and dead pixels, so coming from the USA I dont need the heartache.

I would love a 120/140hz screen but I aint paying a premium for a TN panel in this day and age. I would rather have the 2560x1440 with a premium screen. If I need to invest in a better GPU I will. But I am fairly confident that the 6990 will power BF4 at 60fps with the Asus screen.

I am getting 100+ FPS on my 1920x1200 with everything on ULTRA no motion blur or other little tweaks.

Thought the Qnix would throw another spanner in the works :)
Buying monitors right now is like navigating a minefield.
Pick two flip a coin and if you are even slightly disappointed with the outcome choose the other one

    few quid cheaper on amazon:)

When you get this will you let us all know how you get on with it?
I'm in the same situation myself, looking to change and wanting a higher res, seem's to be the better upgrade from 1080p rather than more hz

Did not realise that:( Was very handy for me also. Nice savings to be had on a few items.
Not sure how much they'd charge delivery in that case for such a big item, amazon may be cheaper overall possibly then.

Dont want to get into it on here but Komplett are a disaster to deal with NEVER AGAIN. Bought two €800 GPUs of them twice and nothing but ****. Amazon on the other hand are excellent.
