how to stop a mac from opening with the last file

hi gang,

i love my mac, but i have one major gripe with it: it opens the last edited/viewed file every time you launch MS Word, PDF Viewer, or even Textedit.

Is there a way of disabling this, it's really annoying...

Yes 3 ways:

1) When quitting and app, use Quit and close all windows (CMD + ALT + Q)

2) Holding ALT when opening an opening an app does not restore previous sessions

3) To completely disable it go to System Preferences > General and tick option to Close windows when quitting an application

None of this happens to me ! How are you starting the applications ? Word always starts with a blank new page, Text edit is the same when you click the main icons. Are you actually quitting out of the app or just closing the open window (which a lot of new Mac users seem to do). CMD+Q will quit an application properly.

As ZENER said, clicking on the red dot in MS Word and many other programs often doesn't close the program like it does in Windows (although confusingly others like Preview do!). You need to CMD + Q to close a program fully.

You guys must have automatic resume disabled, or like me you are in the habit of closing windows before quitting, because otherwise apps which support it will resume where you left off the next time you open them as eurotrotter described. It was one of the most controversial new features of Lion.
