Defer for a year am i entitled to anything??

My boyfriend has been considering a years deferal and we are trying to work out if it is finacialy viable what I am wondering is he entitled to any sort of money in the year he is out be it dole or what not if he cant get a job ..? Has anybody any experience with this sort of thing
