Scratched bumper repair cost?

Hi , I stupidly knocked into a guy in traffic causing very minor white scratches on his bumper(car was black so looks noticeable) .. I'm currently a learner and would love to just pay for the repair myself instead of a claim on my already exaggerated insurance !

Just wondering if anyone had an idea of what I'd be looking at cost wise - I don't really want to get ripped off!

If its any help it was a 3 yr. old Peugeot with black metallic paint.

I got my bumper resprayed a few months back from a guy who isn't known to be cheap and does top quality work for 200. And it really is a top quality job. Also black metallic paint.

So ballpark 200 for the repair. Also have to take into account that if the guy has to be without his car while it is repaired he is entitled to a hire car for that time.

I notice from doing a bit of a googling around a lot of places come out and do it on the spot.. Think the guy mentioned he'd be bringing it to a garage (possibly a local one) would I be reckless to assume it'd be more expensive at a run of the mill garage than a specialist sort of place??

Normal garages don't do this type of work, they would outsource it to some panel beater they know.

Some services do come out to you yes, but if they guy wants to bring it somewhere then it's his choice, it's probably what I would do.

Hopefully he's honest and it doesn't cost you much, annoying thing to happen but can happen to the best of us.

Honestly, it's impossible for anyone here to say without properly examining the car - there may be damage behind the bumper that you couldn't see.

All you can do is offer to pay for repair and suggest places that might suit.

But the other guy is under no obligation to accept either.

Other driver is entitled to have repaired at garage of his choice. If you dont agree with cost or bodyshop you can let your insurance company deal with it but you may lose your NCB

I doubt it will be 200 euro to repair, I would expect it to be much more expensive

I don't see why we would expect it to be much more expensive than 200. From the info the OP has provided he lightly touched a car and has removed some paint from the bumper - leading to a full respray of the bumper ~ 200

If the guy needs another car for a day or two yes it will be more expensive but we don't know if that's an issue or not

Big difference in getting a job done cheap and having it restored to original condision.

Ive seen too many bumper repairs that wont stand up to a garage pressure wash and they look horrible when the clear coat starts lifting.

Yup. If I was the party that got hit I'd be getting it fully checked out. There could be damage behind the bumper that's not immediately obvious and I'd then getting it properly resprayed.

What make/model of car was it?

Cheers for reply guys.. Tbh I'd happily pay 0-€500 to get rectified!..

    Make was a black peugot 206, 2010

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 635 ✭✭✭BillJ

Of course it'll need to be checked out for structural damage also.

But if it was just a respray I don't see why it would be more than 200 or 250.

I've had a top quality job done by a guy who does crash repairs for a ford main dealer in cork for 200. Included fully prepping the paint for a new colour and also removing old bumper and fitting new one. Months in and not a stone chip present.

Just trying to let the OP know that 500+ for just spraying a bumper is a lot. If not going through insurance I'd be asking for receipts

I actually think €200 is a very low estimate for the work tbh

The likes of Trimtech would definitely charge more going on quotes I had from them in the past.

I would have thought about E300, can recommend a guy if you like Op...

The Guy he hit owned a three year old car. If it was well looked after surely he would be in the position to request a new bumper if he so wished.

And what would you think is a fair price?

I'd probably expect to pay up to €500 depending on where the owner takes his car.

That's if the owner doesn't decide they want a new bumper and work to blend in the new part with the rest of the car.

It's all up to the owner of the car at the end of the day, they have the choice to decide where they get the work done.

I think €200 sounds about right, scuffed the rear bumper last year and cracked it at fog light while reversing. Got bumper plastic welded and resprayed to metallic finish for €230, top class job, no visible difference from before.

I would say it is your right regardless of age. But would you only get a new one if the old one was cracked bent etc?

Otherwise getting a new one sprayed is the same as getting the old one sprayed and therefore needlessly more expensive

I always thought they should add a bit on the back of the car which could take the hit instead of having valuable parts like the bumper getting damaged.

500 for one panel seems excessive to me, including blending, just my opinion.

I know I'd feel robbed anyway.

Might start taking recommendations (just at least to have a few places to recommend to the guy) .. Many thanks!

I suppose it all comes down to how much damage was done - using my judgement I'd think it was literally just paint scuff- considering the speed the car was travelling. I'll have to wait and see what he comes back with - general consensus would be ; respray is €200-€300 new bumper /damage repair + respray €500+

    Thanks guys

Think that's usually when the car doesn't have covered bumpers (ie just black not same colour of car) .. This one was !

-apologies just read this rightly second time around .. Yeah like a bumper car :) would make stuff like this a lot easier !

well my recommendation is jonny from CarCosmetix, have had him do a few jobs on my own and the brothers bm, one of the best things is he comes and collects the car and drops it back off, same day, saves a ton of hassle. if you search carcosmetix on facebook, you will find him... i.e even if the person was working, Im sure they could drive to work and have it dropped back at end of day...

Hi guys just to update ,
Guy came back with a quote from a Peugeot garage in Louth (his local) and looks like there seems to be damage behind the bumper and that it wasn't just aesthetic ! .. Quote from garage €1400

Looks like Christmas is gonna be tight!
Cheers for all info , and keep in mind if you ever hit anyone never take it too lightly!

Christmas doesn't have to be tight that is why you have insurance.

You should do the maths and see whats going to work out best for yourself, pay upfront now or try figure out how much your no claims bonus is worth and what you'll be paying extra for a premium next year, and the years after also.

To be honest I'd have the insurer handle the claim, they will not be messed with and you pay them for peace of mind.

You also probably don't have a no claims bonus to lose either I presume? Might be tough getting insurance at renewal though from anyone but the likes of xsdirect though.

Was there any marks to your own car?

Did you get a breakdown of costs for the 1400?
    Was there structural damage?

Seems excessive. Rear bumpers are quite cheap to buy:
    http://www.micksgarage.com/shop/Body%20Panels/Peugeot/Peugeot%20206/

Then a quick spray of the bumper.

Some garages when they hear an insurance claim will be made for repairs, up the price.

My friends 2010 Audi A6 was hit just behind the drivers side back door - panel was cut and very light damage to door. There was also a little bit of scuffting to rear wheel. He took pity on the guy and got a quote of €900 to fix outside of insurance (incl a new rim). Garage said it would be good as new at that price. Anyway the other guy went behind his back and called out his insurance compay to accident site and tried to put blame fully on friend so the gloves came off and a new quote was sought going through insurance - its now €4k and includes a weeks car hire that won't be availed of.
