Another Car Tax Query

I am looking at purchasing a car (just a run around to take children to playschool and so on) I was looking at a few on donedeal, all of which have no tax for last few months. My question is do I have to pay the backdated tax or does the previous owner pay it.

You pay it from the month you bought it onwards.

search and ye shall find about a dozen threads which will tell you that you are only liable for the tax from the first of the month of purchase.

No you are only liable for the tax from the moment you own the car.

So if you buy a car on the 29th of this month you'll have to pay for ALL of November, if you buy it (or at least sign the logbook) on the 1st of December you only pay for december.

Thanks guys, does the previous owner pay the back dated tax, reason I ask is the car is abit pricey considering the age and miles. Someone suggested the owner may have to pay the back dated tax, hence looking for slightly inflated price to make up the shortfall,

not your problem..if its pricey dont buy it...lots of other options.

Yeah I realise that but I wondering could that be the reason or is he aiming for a high price knowing a potential buyer will bargain anyway.

No, the previous owner doesn't have to pay.

Its a load of balls, there was work needed to be done on the car before I started driving it, why would I be paying road tax if it wasn't on the road? Surely there is another way rather than changing ownership?

you can declare it off the road when you buy it

Have you been living under a rock? New laws came into place about declaring your car off road, it was advertised on the national media and everything.

Ignorance isn't an excuse being perfectly honest.
