What car... 6500 budget

Second family car needed. Sold my van privately last week and got 5500 for it. Will put another 1000 with it.

I do approx 20000 kms a year which probably justifies a diesel? I think.

Was thinking a 2007 car would be a best bet as there seems to be a false economy when it comes to 2008 prices cause of road tax.

Have kinda narrowed it down to

    Ford Focus
    Skoda Octavia
    VW Jetta

Anything else I should consider or any advice?

What do you do man? As in what will you need the car for?
Where is the driving done,Towns and short trips or longer distance?
And your right about the 2008 thing, massive extra premium for a couple of hundred in savings.

Daily trip of about 25 miles one way. Mainly country rounds with very little city driving.

Occasional city trips etc, motorway miles etc.

I missed lovely 06 Focus yesterday  trying to convince myself it was all for luck

That will happen, don't settle for the first you see. Be choosy as there is a world of cars for ya :)
It sounds like you're in diesel territory alright, I'd like an Octavia or of those three :) Had a hatchback focus of that vintage before and didn't like it, but sure get a spin in one and you may :)

Cargiant.co.uk look like an option too.

Could bring a 09 Focus in and have VRT paid for 7500 all in... (plus the ferry, flight and travel costs).

    No come back though....

I always but me cars privately. This is my two cents coming now. .

When I bought my last car, I spent ages finding a good one, I'd say I done 1000km's before I found one I was happy with (manual, leather, 3 litre :)). I got this car for €5500. If I were to purchase it in a dealers in looking at €8000.
Now I have a €2500 cushion that I call my warranty, it lasts longer than 6 months and if nothing goes wrong then happy days :)

If you know your way about a car and can find a good one it can be a very cheap endeavour :)

I'd go for the octavia every time they are a good reliable car. They seem to hold there value reasonably well. My parents have of them and they never cause any issue. That's what I'd choose out of the 3 on the list and I have a diesel focus.

The standard Octavia isn't a nice car to drive - the 1.6 crdi Ceed or 1.8 tdci Focus are much nicer in my opinion.

Also, I don't think the reliability of the Octavia is as good as it's made out to be. The 1.9 is going to be one of the better engine options for reliability and low mileage like yours, there isn't a dpf and the main things to worry about are DMF's and timing belts. The Jetta will be more of the same but will have a nicer interior and also looks a bit better.

I should mention I do a small bit of farming on the side...

I'd look like a right kunt going down to the local Co-Op for a bag of beef nuts in a Kia Ceed. :D

The Ceed SW might be an option then.

Focus would be the best bet on back roads imo. Drives beautifully.

You'll fit a lot of nuts in the boot of an octavia, got one myself recently, no complaints

If you do a bit of farming - is a Mk 1 santa fe any good????

We have one here - 4 wheel drive diesel which is used as the farm workhorse - and its been fine - and its done perfectly fine in front of a trailor when weve needed to.

Weve had a livestock trailor with two cows in it behind ours - without issues - one thing id say though - reverse gear is slightly too high with a trailor on the back - but not in a deal breaker type way (imo) - and theres a bit of a gap between first and second (just let it rev up more before changing up).

Very well behaved on the road though even with two cows in the back of the trailor

Bit boring for my car enthusiast taste - but that may not be a consideration for you.

They definitely aren't as economical as the cars you have on your shortlist - so may not suit.

One thing to note though - don't go for a petrol Santa Fe - they are thirstier then the diesel - and as far as I know - they were all two wheel drive (personally I think a Santa Fe type machine in two wheel drive is epically pointless - but hey ho).

Apologies if it looks like ive completely missed the point of what your looking for - just thought id throw it out there - if Mk 1 Santa fes no good for you - feel free to completely ignore

Btw - Mk 1 Santa Fe - is the original 01 to 05/very early 06 model, there was a new model in 06 - but can't vouch for them - have heard of a few people having issues with them. Probably may still be okay though
