Questions about beef farming

    Well,

I'm 19 atm and I am looking to head into farming. I'm still in school and I am looking to head into uni next year. Anyways, I've got €4,000. I'm planning to buy weanlings. Recently I bought a Hereford weanling for €350. Should I add more weanlings for this value or go for the more expensive charolais or BB?

Buying the animals is my only expense. My father backs up feed, vet bills etc.

So basically say I sell the hereford for €1,000 I'm making €650profit when in reality my dad is footing the bills so technically we won't make any profit.

Apart from the original question I would also like to know where farmers lose out their money, e.g. €50 vet bill, €200 feed etc.

Cheers for any advice and sorry for my ignorance.

I know I could ask my dad but all I get is we're breaking even :D

stick with the cheaper ones. they should come into 1000 animals at some stage. when your not worried about the bills you have plenty of time.

I would also go with the cheaper ones. If you are buying Hereford at 350 then you can pick up 11 and still have money left over. That would give you 12 along with the one you have bought. I'm assuming these weanlings are roughly 200kg. You should be able to get them to 400-450kg by next Autumn. If you can get 1.60kg at that stage they will run into 650-700. That works out around 8000. Considering that you are not worried about covering your only costs then you are doubling your money

If you are looking to buy the nice Charolais or BB then be prepared to give 700-800. You will only get 5-6 for your 4000. They would need to make 1500-1600 each to leave you behind the same money as 12 Herefords. These are just rough estimates
