I think its used instead of chap. I know people that use it in the shoes context. Most Dublin Slang doesnt have a proper English word equivalent.

I think chats would effectively be the same as someone say they have new threads, i.e. that they have new clothes? Or else "chat" is a catch-all term for anything. I could be wrong. I've heard it used before a few years back, but don't know from who. Don't think it's a Dublin term as such.

According to http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=chat it originated in Sydney: There is a suburb named Chatswood in Sydney, the word was first used by a small group of individuals from the North Shore who had a disliking for a group of individuals from Chatswood. So if you were trying to offend your Shorey mate, you would call him Chat, or if you saw something sh1t, ugly etc, you would call it chat.*Friend tells lame joke*
    "That was chat"

1.anything you don't know the name for
    2.anything disgusting
3.simile for sh1t, crap, turd, and other related words...

    It's also claimed :
Ecstacy tablets, particularly in rural Ireland.
"I did five chats last night and I came up like a sky boy"

    that's "Jats" not "Chats".

    Chats means clothes.

    "Check out me new chats"

I'm mid-30s by the way, and would have used those words in my teens in Coolock/Artane

I grew up in Dublin 15 and I have never heard this term before ever!

I'm in my mid-thirties as well. Must have had a sheltered life :D

This thread makes me feel old and out of touch and simultaneously young and ignorant

Cake, and grief counseling, will be available at the conclusion of the test

Trying in my head to locate nearest areas to those as i don't know anyone from Coolock\Artane, the term has not been used by people i know from nearby Santry and Donaghmede or heard of by myself(D11).

It could be a recent D4 import for the youngwans and youngfella's ;)

I've never heard chats used for anything other than tits.

Would only mean to have a chat in my eyes, usually over cans.

Born in Dublin and lived here nearly 30 years and I've only heard chats to mean just that, chat e.g. We must meet up next week and have the chats.

    From Dublin, northside. Born 1970s.

"Chats" was an informal term for "breasts".

    Still is, for some people.

I'm out of secondary school around 4 years now (Finglas) and "chat" was just one of those words that could be applied in any situation .. Usually something deadly, good , leeeethal..

E.g look at these little chats (runners)
Never used it much meself! :)
