2008 vw passat 2.0 tdi engine rattle white smoke

Hi I recently bought a08 passat 2.0 tdi only had it 7 days and had to bring it to the garage it came up error code p 3138 it has something to do with the intake manifold flap or wiring to it..does any one no if this would cause the white smoke and engine rattle and would ye no if it is expensive to fix..thanks

I'm not sure what the engine code is but was told the fault code was p3138 and it and it had something to do with the intake manifold flap m8

The reason I asked you the engine code was because in 2008 the Passats changed from the older type PD engine to the newer Common Rail (CR) engine.

The CR engine has a motor to control the intake manifold flaps. If this motor fails then the entire manifold with motor must be replaced as one part. Changing the motor alone will not work. This is a pretty expensive job, the parts alone are €450 IIRC.

@George, very slightly off-topic but in the context of the white smoke mentioned in the OP, what colour is the smoke given off during DPF regeneration? I always supposed it would be black because of the soot involved but few threads I have read lately cause me to wonder if it could be white.

Thanks George I will have a look at the engine code today it would be in the log book of the car would it?the garage has the car at the moment have you come across many problems like this before ?

Hi George just got my car back from the vw garage and they are saying that everything is fine apart from that injector 3 is running higher than the rest at 2.8 and it's ok as far as the don't go as high as 3.9..but the engine is still running rough at low idle and they changed the running flap and all and that it's normal for them type of engines to run like that..but I can't see how it's normal for an engine to shake like that from a car that year..I'm based in the curragh and was just wondering if it would cost me much to bring it down to yourself to see if ye could diagnose the problem as it is getting annoying at this stage..
