CSPE Action Project Query

Hi, I've looked through the forum but cannot get a definite answer to my question.
Asked my 2nd years today for ideas for an Action Project and the overwhelming majority wanted to a fundraise for a Cancer charity.
This was decided upon after a vote where each person wrote down the charity they wanted to support.
Can a fundraiser for the Irish Cancer Society, etc be done?

If not I can easily change it to something such as Focus Ireland, ISPCC, etc; however I would prefer to go with what the majority want to do.

    Thanks

    Don't see why not.

Cheers and thanks for the reply Seamo87, however I meant it in the sense is it allowed as cancer is not clearly defined in one of the concepts of the course.
Guidelines say it has to be clearly linked into one of the seven concepts so I'm not 100% sure cancer is before I give the students a reply for the charity they want to support. Waiting for a reply from the PDST which will take a week or two just hoping some on here might have experience in the past.
I know of one school who did it but I've no idea how the grades ended up or whether they had checked beforehand that it was ok

It fits in under human dignity. If you have a good class, they should have no problem with this project.

The one area that could be of difficulty is finding 5 facts that relate to human dignity, and not to cancer as an illness. The students will not get marks for facts about statistics of the prevalence of different types of cancer or similar.

Done everything and all seemed to go smoothly now just looking up the 5 facts relating to the topic to get it finished before they enter 3rd year.
Am I correct in saying if we focused on the disparity and location of cancer services throughout the country this would be allowed in this section?
I know they are allowed 5 straight facts so just being 100% sure in this section before I start looking at in the next few weeks.

Thanks once again for the replies so far.

That would be allowable as one fact, it may be taken as a geographical fact rather than a human dignity one, depending on how it was worded.

Cheers Boober I must look into it a little more as I thought each fact about the disparity / lack of facilities would count as stand alone fact that would get the marks. I assumed as a class we could explore say a county like Sligo / Donegal, etc and highlight how people's basic health needs are not being met in an equal way to certain other parts of the country (3 hour drive for cancer services, etc) and then focus on a different part of the country and focus on another similar scenario. Of course I would only use information that the students found that was fact and not opinion.

I have done the DSPCA or ISPCC the last 5 years and I made the mistake of changing this year and going with what the students wanted but never realised the health related ones would be so tricky. A nice learning curve though and thanks again for all the advice so far from people.

I have always told my students cancer etc are definitely not topics to choose for CSPE...when I did the inservice many moons ago we were very clearly informed that illnesses / medical conditions are definitely not allowed...they do not fit into any of the course concepts...human dignity is a stretch imo

Thanks Solerina but they are allowed. Just after being on here yesterday I got a number earlier today and got in contact with the Deputy Chief Examiner (Mairin Wilson) who gave me all the information I needed. All health / illness / medical related Action Projects fall into the human dignity concept and she told me what approach to take with the section 4 + 5.
Definitely a tricky one as I've found out and I still stick to what I've done in the past from now.
Once again thanks Solerina as all advice greatly welcome.

I'm guessing you have a clear idea on what to do for your facts now, so I won't add to it, I would advice a variety of types of facts though.

The reason it is advised to avoid illnesses at inservice is that inservice is usually for teachers new to the subject, and it is a little bit trickier to work the human dignity element of the course.

IMO services for cancer patients in this country is integral to human dignity, and not a stretch at all. If treating sick and dying people with dignity and understanding, and giving them to be treatment in a way that is respectful and allows them to continue with their lives as best they can doesn't fit under human dignity, I don't know what does.
