How to tell what insulation is in exterior walls

    Hi folks,

A quick one. Just bought a relatively newly built house (2001). House has miserable insulation in the attic which I'm sorting out this weekend.

But a quick chat to a neighbour who has recently done their house up spectacularly got me thinking about what's in the walls.

Basically, in the process of renovating their house their builder uncovered the fact that there was actually no insulation in the cavities. Yup, the original builder had done a cheapy. This person paid a company €800 to pump the north facing wall as a result.

My question is - is there any way of finding out what's actually in the walls of our house? Cos if there really is no insulation in ours as well then maybe pumping the walls is something we would consider.

    Cheers,
    Quad

Drill a small hole externally. You should be able to see what is in there.

    Yes, a borescope survey

    Hi syd,

How? The box is recessed into the wall at the side of the house.

Assuming it's a cavity wall, in most cases you are able to see in where the power conduit enters from below. SHine a Light in and try to see.
