I'm a 3rd year Science student at NUIG and I have chosen to do Botany for my final degree.

I am already looking at my options for further education. I was looking at doing a MSc. in Applied Food Science at UCD or a HDip in Post Primary Education in Science related subjects obviously.

I was always really interested in becoming a science teacher, but I didn't get the points for the Science Education in UL because unrelated subjects like honours French let me down, whilst I excelled in my Science subjects, but hey? that's the way the CAO runs...

Where I went to school, the way the Science based teachers were set up was something like this; each teacher taught J.C. Science and specialized in one L.C. science subject e.g., some teachers taught J.C. Science and L.C. Biology, the others taught J.C. Science and L.C. Chemistry, J.C. Science and L.C. Physics and J.C. Science and L.C. Agricultural Science.

There are 13 subjects available for the HDip programme, and the Science related subjects are Biology, Chemistry and Physics.
As part of my course in first year I did Biology (includes: Biochem, Botany, Micro and Zoology), Chemistry, EOS and Maths. In 2nd year I specialized in Chemistry, Botany and EOS. For 3rd year I am continuing with Botany and EOS and for 4th year, Botany.

Am I eligible to do the Hdip in Education for Science related subjects?
*If* I was eligible I would like to teach Junior Cert Science and Leaving Cert Biology.
What 2 subjects do you have to pick to be eligible and teach JC Science in particular, (Biology is obvious if I want to teach it) as the course requires 2 subjects but doesn't specify general Science for Junior Cert, just Biology, Chemistry and Physics.

Is it also possible to pick subjects which you may have not done during my degree? because I have done Geography for my L.C. and the physical geography part of the syllabus interlinks with Earth and Oceans Science.

Here's a helpful link to the info, which is the best info I could find but it still doesn't answer my question.

You don't choose which subjects to teach as such, your degree and the modules you have completed dictate what you're qualified to teach. Check the list of recognised degrees on the Teaching Council website to see what subjects your degree qualifies you in. You won't see junior science listed in many places because, as far as I'm aware, once you're qualified to teach a LC science subject you're qualified for Junior science.

Job situation is dire, I know you didn't ask, but I'm sure you know that :)

    Aye,

you will need to send in your quals for assement if it does not appear on the list. This cost money too as well as the fees to join the council. No harm in sending them a quick email and ask for some information. As far as I can remember your main subject has to be 2/3 of your course degree. i studied general science for 4 years and specialised in Biology, and I got accepted. With that I had done maths, chemistry and computer science during the other 3 years.

shouldnt be an issue with your course but as was said above it's hard to get work at home.
