Trade in my car against a brand new car someone else is buying

My in-laws are planning on buying a new car, not sure what make or model yet. Would dealerships have an issue with using my car as a trade in given that I'm not purchasing the car?

I could then come to an arrangement with the in-laws and save me the hassle of selling mine.

I doubt they would care, but if you think its an issue then why not fill out the change of owner form and send it back to Shannon so the car will be in their name when they trade it in?

It's possible, but you'll only be getting trade price from the dealer - you'd have to subtract the available cash discount on the car they buy from the trade-in allowance, which won't leave you with much. Better to sell privately.

Don't do this. It's one extra owner on the car, for no advantage.

Would the inlaws not get a better price on the new car by being cash buyers?

So it probably wouldn't be ideal for them or yourselve.

Yes technically the garage should have no problem taking your car in part exchange, assuming it is a car they think they can sell on. Financially though, both you and the in-laws will be worse off from doing it.

Mine is a 2011 Octavia. I'm not sure how big of a market there is for it selling privately. Most people looking to buy a similar car would rather go to a dealer I think for piece of mind and probably some form of warranty. There's also the fact I'm nervous about doing a private deal for that value on my driveway pretty much.

I know it might not be the best option financially but I might get them to speak to the dealers about it. If I feel I'd get enough for mine doing the trade in then I might take it to make things easier.

The dealer should not have an issue. All they will ask you to do is bring in the registration documents and do the temporary change of ownership over to them when the in-laws pick up the new car.
