Drink Driving

I made a huge mistake over a year ago and got caught drink driving. Would this completely rule me out of getting recruited. Have never had any trouble other than this.

I'd imagine if you were up against a candidate for a place who in all other respects was equally qualified, it would. If they were short on applicants to fill places, I'm sure it wouldn't.

    What do you think...?

    Yes I suppose yeah.

Apply and do your best. Same as everybody else. Best of luck.

Rule you out completely? Don't think it would but your mistake would certainly be considered. If I were you I would still apply but be prepared to answer some very serious questions at interview stage.

You are a human being so therefore it's a given you will make mistakes just like everyone else. I wouldn't use this as an excuse though

Okay thanks. Also I'm still 19, maybe I'm a bit too young to go for it at this stage. Was advised to do some travelling and go to college before applying by a local guard.

    The mistake was getting caught?

Sounds reasonable. Get some life experience in. It'll stand to you. It'll be easier to explain the incident as 'young fella foolishness' when your not a young fella anymore. Also, a relevant degree can't do your prospects any harm at interview, or in terms of opportunities and promotion.

No the mistake was even considering it.

First lesson on Boards! If you hear the 'clippety-clop' of a poster riding in on a high horse, you're not obliged to respond.

It was clear to me what you meant in your original post.

What conviction did you receive? This decides a lot.

Advanced driver training would be an issue so...

Alright I see. Just trying to get in though in general say when I have my licence back, would it prove a big stumbling block in your opinion?

People make mistakes. Guards are people. If this is what you really want to do, then spend a few years becoming the ideal candidate.

There is actually no 'ideal' candidate. Check some of the other recruitment threads on here for ideas. Get involved in community, sport, and clubs. At 19, you've plenty of time to put a mistake behind you.

The average age for recruiting is 23 approx. Don't rush in but plan your employment/education path over the next few years with an aim of applying then. At the moment there will be only minimal recruiting but in 3 or 4 years they will have to have a recruiting campaign with high numbers. At that stage your conviction will be well behind you and you will have a lot of positives in your favour

    Advanced driver training???

Reversing a car on a public road would be an issue if your disqualified, let alone advanced driver training
