Mature student entry to third level

Hi I'm just wondering if distance learning courses can help me to gain entry to third level as a mature student. I was looking at Social Psychology on The Open College.ie. On completion of the course, you are awarded a statement of achievement. I'm hoping to study Psychology in WIT or UCC. I know that when you apply as a mature student you compete against other applicants, but would doing this course help increase my chances of getting a place? Thanks
