Any recommendations on a hard drive?

Looking for an internal hard drive. The one I have is old and I can only assume the root of my long start up,shut down times, not responding errors and freezes and also but I'm not entirely sure extremely slow transfer rates(2-3 hours to transfer 1GB to external HDD) and numerous other problems mainly to do with speed.
I've pretty much done everything short of a complete restore and still nothing. Ran a system health report SMART predict failure check failed and 1 storage device fail of 5 tests.
It may not be the hard drive but I really think it is because I've only just built a gaming rig this summer and its the oldest part of the computer.
Pretty much everything including the PSU,CPU,Motherboard,RAM and GPU are all new.
The hard drive came with a computer I got about maybe 6 years ago.

Anyway back to the question at hand. Any recommendations on a good Internal HDD at a good price. Current is a 1TB. Good size. Don't really need more but if its good value for money I'd go more.

I had a similar issue some time ago but it turned out to be one of my memory sticks. I would run memtest just to be sure your memory is ok. While harddrives do fail it has been my experience that they are the least likely component to do so. I am also going to upgrade my HD but am thinking of an SSD drive, mainly for the faster boot up and program opening speed, would you not consider one of those. Either way you should make sure it is indeed your HD that's the issue, there are plenty of tools available on the net for testing HDD's. If you are going to go ahead with the HD purchase have a look at the reviews on this site: http://www.storagereview.com/

I will run a memtest later but even tho it could be the RAM it was bought brand new this summer. It's Kingston 8GBs (4GBx2). I just have a feeling it's the hard drive. I have intel rapid storage and I do get messages saying something like an error with the hard disk and when I go and press reset to normal everything's fine for a little while and then I get the message again.

It's a gaming rig and even tho I'd like an SSD I need the HDD for space and don't really have the money for both.

    Thanks ill check it out

SDDs are expensive but worth it. I got a SDD and then two 3tb harddrives. The normal hds can be picked up cheap. I would not skimp on the sdd size though if you game.

I've been told they don't do a lot for games aside from faster load up times.

I think its worth it for the OS alone. Games still use the hd and page file.

So what do you make of the 2TB SSHD drive?

Good idea and cheaper price. I would check reviews for it.

Ran the memory diagnostic tool. No problems on two passes. As I said everything is brand new apart from the hard drive. It could well be one of the new parts that is causing the problems but for me my money is on the hard drive.

SSD's do help with gaming performance that's for sure, check out the Diablo 3 comparison between HHD's and SSD's, you can see the difference there ^^

Skyrim has stopped crashing on me ever since I moved to SSD ^^

    Did you defrag it?

A hundred isn't bad for a hd and even if the HD you have is not the issue you can use it as extra storage space. Hopefully its not a motherboard issue.

I would hope not. Only bought the ASRock ZH77 Pro 3 during the summer. If only I had the money to be spending, will be praying its the hard drive. Cant afford to be paying 100 quid for it not to be the problem. Have an external 2TB HDD drive but I have stuff on it so I cant exactly just shove that in as Ive no where to back up that data
