Hi everyone. My tax disc expired on 31st October (2 weeks ago). If I were to tax it next week would I have to pay arrears of 1 month plus 3 months tax? or could I tax it for three months including November even though we are already 2 weeks into November? Very confusing!

New tax disc will commence on Nov 1st, so if you buy 3 months tax during November your new disc will expire on the last day of Jan 2014

Is it the case that arrears are only due if your disc is expired by a month or more?

If you go in to the motor tax office you will need to pay for 1 months arrears plus a minimum of 3 months tax, they won't let you buy 3 months tax on it's own and have 2 months remaining.

It may be possible if you have the pin reminder to do it on motortax.ie get the 3 months only that way, I'm not 100%.

There is leeway for the first week of the month to run the tax from the previous month. After that it's arrears and 3 months tax.
The arrears rate includes a small penalty again now, for a while there it had to be a normal month's rate.

    What arrears??
There'd be no arrears due until Dec 1st, if its still not taxed by then that is!!

I bought a car on the 25th of Septemeber 2013- and havent been using it since i bought it.

Went on to motor tax website to tax it and it is asking me to pay the following:

The tax for this vehicle expired on 30/11/2012

    Arrears are due as follows:
    Arrears Period: 01/09/2013 - 31/10/2013
    Arrears Amount: EUR 142

The new tax disc will commence on 01/11/2013

Is this correct should I be paying arrears if im a new car owner and this is the first time im taxing this car?

    Yep that's correct.
You owned the Car in Sept so are liable for the tax that month

You pay tax from the beginning of the month in which you took ownership.
Now on the old system, you could have signed it off the road but that facility is now gone so I see little option but to pay the tax unless you are to change ownership again to another family member but given the figures involved, that would be foolish really.

Under new system, you must declare car off the road in advance if not using it.

alright then guys, i guess paying the arrears has to be done, they need to do something about this, the reason i didnt get it taxed that month was becuase i was skinned and did not drive it, but now i have to pay anyway :D

    Thanks Guys

they just did do something about it/. They brought in a system where you can declare it off the road in advance if you aren't going to use it. It was all over the TV and the papers.

so even if the car was parked and I was not using it?

When you bought it u had 10 days to declare ''Off the road'' .Now its to late:(

Q14. I've just bought a vehicle - how can I make a declaration that I intend to keep it off the road for a while?
A14. If you have just bought a new vehicle or just acquired a second hand one and do not intend to use it immediately, you will have ten days from the date of purchase (as specified in the registration document or the notification of transfer of vehicle ownership) to furnish a declaration of non-use. In that case, the declaration will commence from the first day of the month in which the sale takes place, or the first day of the month of registration in the case of new vehicles.

Make sure you notify the seller that you are intending to declare the vehicle off the road and that you need him or her to ensure that the change of ownership is notified to the National Vehicle and Driver File as soon as possible.
