    This is a curiosity thread based on some posts I've read recently, particularly in the TY and LC forums.

    Does your school do a proper TY with different goals and objectives than the LC curriculum or do you run a 3 year LC?

    I thought you were not allowed to use TY as a 3rd year of the LC but there are quite a few students about posting that they are doing Y1 of three LC years

    My subjects are Maths and Chemistry. This is only my third year teaching, but I like to spend TY doing loads of problem solving in Maths and also taking the time to spend ages on Stats, Probability and Sequences, with a hands on approach and not much exam focus. With Science, I'd love if my students could do a module of each Science, perhaps do a non LC related project or even a LC topic and experiment, and then choose their 5th and 6th year options afterwards.

    That's what we do in our place.
    TY students do 10 weeks of bio, chem & physics and most of the material covered isn't found on the LC courses and they pick their science subjects for senior cycle in April/may.
    TY is compulsory in our school though.

    I teach languages and take advantage of smaller class sizes to do lots of oral work. I have heard my students saying that they are doing Leaving Cert oral work and I suppose they are to a degree but it all very basic and is not really Leaving Cert standard. They obviously don't see it that way. It will help slightly in 5th year but they will have to expand and improve upon what they have done. I suppose it depends on whether TY is compulsory or not- it would be pointless to do much Leaving Cert work if it had to be done from scratch again in 5th year.

    Some school do still have the left over idea of the 3 yr leaving. Its a selling point to some parents but is seriously discouraged by the dept. I know of a school which calls some of its LC programme "transition Activites " A little naughty id have thought.

    Jeez, Ty is always under review in our school ...complaints range from; not academic enough to too academic..you can never win but I suppose the fun is in the trying. I think these new JC initiatives should be just thrown into 4th year and let us get on with teaching the 3rd years what they need to know.the all important 'outcomes' should be the same no !

    But doing LC exam stuff is a big no no. We can explore related concepts though. 3 years for a LC though is a bit shnakey and not really fair on students.
