Claiming somene elses Jobseekers

My father is going into hospital for 6 weeks. He is currently on jobseekers and wont be able to get to the post office to collect his money. He claims for himself and my mother. This means my mam wont have any money for 6 weeks.

Is there any way the post office/social will let my mother collect his money while he's in hospital??

Theres no point in my mother putting in her own claim because my father will be out of hospital before it goes through... Any suggestions appreciated

Jobseekers is for someone that is ready willing and able to work, so your dad isn't really entitled to it for that period. He should be making an application for illness benefit (think that's what it's called!) for the period.

Illness benefit can be posted out or lodged to an account while your dad is in hospital and recuperating. When he has recovered and is able to work, he can move back to jobseekers.

Best thing is for your dad to contact the welfare office and explain the situation, they'll tell him what forms he needs to fill in to sort it out.

He's gong to apply for disability as his doctor said he's entitled to it but that doesn't help there immediate situation. His disability could take weeks if not months to come through - happened to my friends mam. The social seem to take ages to do anything. My dads hospital stay is coming up soon and I was hoping there might be a quicker solution to the problem :(

Not sure but I think if he talks to the local welfare officer and fills in the forms then they will put an emergency payment in the post office while waiting for it to come through?

No one else apart from your Dad will be allowed to collect his money. Plus his claim might be affected if he is not meeting the criteria for jobseekers.

His doctor should already have put him on illness benefit if he is encouraging him to apply for disability allowance.

He will remain on his present payment until a decision is made about disability payments.

    Closed.
