The phone companies are obliged to keep records for a while, probably of numbers called/received/cell tower location data. Does an individual have any right to get a copy of these records, maybe under Data Protection legislation, maybe for a fee?

If it's your own, then yes. Freedom of information + fee = all your data. *

Actually the Freedom of Information Act only covers public bodies. However under the Data Protection Act you are entitled to request any personal information which your mobile company holds on you. There is a sample request letter here http://www.dataprotection.ie/ViewDoc.asp?fn=/documents/rights/2d.htm&CatID=17&m=r.

    I expect so.

Your rights in terms of data protection include "Right to access your personal details" and "Right to have your details used in line with data protection regulations" which includes "A data controller who holds information about you must: ... give you a copy of your personal information when you ask for it."

    see http://www.dataprotection.ie/docs/A_guide_to_your_rights_-_Plain_English_Version/858.htm

Also, for example Vodafone 'advertises' their procedure. I'm sure the others are the same.
