    Hi all,

I am about to take the plunge and buy a saab 9-5 2.0lpt auto.

just looking for last minute checks I can carry out before taking the plunge.

Not too familiar with auto box and what to check but felt very smooth on test drive.

(I realise it will be the beginnig of new marriage but price is right)

    Thanks

Just check on the service history, accidents etc. Not familiar with the auto box but the box should change smoothly up and down. The 5 speed one is better and stronger than the old 4 speed in every way.

In general a '06 should be quite a safe bet compared to a pre-03 as the earlier revision of the engine was very susceptible excessive sludge buildup if neglected. Turbo charger is the only somewhat weak spots on 03->. Look out for blue smoke at cold start and at full acceleration. Apart from that listen for noises from suspension and prepare for some bushes/drop links etc. if the car feels a bit wayward over manhole covers etc. Same if the rear tyres have uneven wear.

They are quite a decent bus really.

Dont bother with the 2.0 LPT.

    Get the 2.3 HPT. 250hp :D:cool:

I just scapped '00 Aero like that due to high oil consumption at genuine 124k, but if the car checks out it would be a bargain. The mileage is *very* low at 7000 miles a year, if genuine, but no NCT. You'd want a very through history check on it. Handling on them is excellent.

Thanks lads but I will be sticking with the LPT, plenty for me.

Good advise there re bushings n stuff will watch for that on next drive tomorrow, thanks.

Forgot to say: Look for oil leaks at both ends of the engine. The engine should sound smooth, any rattles from the timing end side indicate that timing chain has stretched beyond the range of the hydraulic tensioner. Changing the timing chain kit is quite a big job but can be done with the engine in situ.

Apart from that check that all the warning lights (check engine, oil pressure, ABS, airbags) come on with ignition on and go off when the engine starts.
