This happens my vw golf (1.4 petrol) occasionally - taking out the air filter, cleaning the throttle body/valve underneath it and a blast of carb spray sorts it out - 5 minute job.

My C Class did something very similar before the fuel pump packed it in . Could be a fuel issue or a faulty sensor etc. Best bet is to bring it to a local garage and have them read for any fault codes. Should not cost much.

    Dirty throttle body or EGR

A little DIY with some carb cleaner

There is plenty of videos on youtube that will show you how to clean both.

If that doesn't cure fault a cheap code reader might tell you where the problem is.

yeah could be egr/trottle body, had that problem on my previous astra, changed egr and cpu update but was costly, so will try diy route first, rather not splash the cash so close to xmas. i tried the diy fault technique for opel cars(where u press brake and accelerater at same time and count the falshing symbol, google it,very handy) and no fault codes came up.thanks lads

Get the engine ECU checked for faults.

Cheapest and quickest way of pointing you in the right direction.

You're as well to get someone to check it with proper equipment, not toy stuff off the net.

    Where abouts are you?

Someone here might be able to recommend someone to you.

carlow. it doesnt happen everyday, which seems odd. could go a week before it could happen again, and it can happen at any time whether its a cold morning shortly after leaving the house, or in evening after driving for awhile, engine fully warmed up. will try all advice anyways thanks all
