Guys, I have a Dell Gx620 PC to salvage and use as part of a little project.

I am looking to get a proper gaming rig built over the next few months but for the moment I am going to use the GX620 and upgrade parts as I can until I am able to get money together for a new build.

I know it wont run recent games but I only have a few of them from the Humble Bundle sales so no biggie right now.

    However I need some advice.

-On the GX620 what OS will I install Vista Ultimate or 7?
    - For the new build what OS would you recommend?
    - What parts can I use to get the most out of the GX620?

    (Its a Pentium D 3.4/ 2Gig of Ram/256MB Nvidia Card)

Also if anyone has parts that are cheap and cheerful for the GX620 or the new build please let me know.

I wouldnt put any money into that PC Tbh. Ur flogging a dead horse. It's very old and any money put into it would be a waste. It's not going to be able to play any new games released in the last couple of years even with an upgrade. Sell it off for 40 euro and put it towards your new build. The processor in it is very very weak. Would struggle to play YouTube. What's the budget for the new PC? Also never use Vista, seven or eight or 10000 times bettet

Just install Win7 or Win8 onto it, regular desktop use will be perfectly fine on a 3.4Ghz Pentium D. Forget about the gaming really.

Im thinking of just using this PC as a media centre when I get the fund for a new build. I have actually come across a slightly better machine tho, i'll put up spec later on today when I get a chance, Case can be reused etc :)

from the dell literally nothing is worth keeping, I know, I have one. Doesn't even really make for a decent media center as its fairly loud and not very energy efficient.

for desktop use, passable, just about. For gaming, not a chance. the case, not so much a problem, as a case is still a case at the end of the day even if the airflow, construction, noise, etc are crap, but a 13 euro power supply is seriously dodgey.

The t-bird is fine, PSU wise, just go for something like this, worth it for piece of mind and future use.

That entire alpine/pulse range is garbage, though some of them are passable for office/low power gaming use as well (the alpine gold is reliable enough for fairly low power draw cards, hilarious that it's sold as a sli/crossfire psu though), for the sake of 10-15 quid though I just wouldn't bother risking it when you should have the power supply for years to come.

Yeah I was thinking that alright. I might go for the case (All depends on the case I bring home tonight and how decent that is).

Any advice on a decent GPU for about 60/70?
Also I want to get a Socket 1155 board and future proof for an i5/i7. What would be a decent cheap motherboard/processor for the moment?

A Celeron G1620 can be got for about €35 and would be a serviceable interim CPU and perfectly acceptable gaming partner for a mid range GPU.
