Following the trend for a wider availability of decent brews its called "The Taphouse", its where that awful "Russells" bar used to be, I was passing this morning didn't go in just stuck my head around the door, taps included "Trouble Brewing", "Galway Hooker" and "O'Hara's Curim Gold" from what I could see, don't know about bottles stocked, looking forward to a few in there this week, a welcome addition to the area.

I'll be checking this out in a couple of week. There's a review that has photos of their bottle list if you search on Google.

Its decent enough, its kind of "craft-ish" as opposed to the likes of The Headline which goes all out. They do craft beer alongside the macros and have Sky Sports News on all the TVs, its all a bit of a mish-mash. They do 400ml glasses of everything for about 3.70, which is grand but all they serve is the staples of which you'd probably want to order a full pint anyway.

I would describe it as "crafty":P

a few nice beers on tap but at €3:70 for a glass (the glass indicated 270ml IIRC, certainly not 400ml) of anything not made by Diageo or Carlsberg we found it prohibitively expensive.

Apparently at 10 pm the volume of the music is turned to nite club volumes, which seems a bit out of character. Probably the place is still trying to figure out its nice and what it wants to be.

    Here's the pricelist. €3.70 gets you 400ml.

that might be the price list but I don't believe that is what I was served. I remember looking at the volume indicator on the glass and I am certain it was not 400ml, perhaps the barman made an error. Either way myself and my Girlfriend felt that the drinks as served were very expensive.

Edit: I'm about 90% certain the barman made an error and served us the wrong glasses or charged us the wrong price. Not really in a rush to go back and find out.

If you look at the website, they seem pretty specific about the issue.
Our beer prices are the same per ml regardless of the size you order - small (1/2 pint), Standard, or large (pint), so enjoy fresher beer.

So either: you got served a half pint glass instead of their 'munique', their 'munique' isn't 400ml, or they didn't fill your glass to the correct level.

€5.30 for a pint of Leann Folláin isn't bad pricing, in comparative terms (for a 6% beer). By contrast, €5.30 for a pint of Heinken, Carslberg, Tiger or Smithwicks Pale Ale seems a little excessive (not that I give a damn, and it's good to see Irish craft beer sold at the same price as the tasteless crap).

We were served two half pint glasses of Metal Man IPA but were charged for two 400ml "Munique" servings. My Grilfriend did the ordering and paying as I was in the gents and wasn't aware of the different sizes, I would have questioned paying €7 for two halfs of beer if had been aware of what we were charged but I only realised after we had left.

Its only two Euros so my knickers aren't in a twist about it but I would expect the bar man to know the glasses and prices if the bar is making a big deal about servings and the freshness of the beer. The place didn't make a great impression on me and this error doesn't help, I think its unlikely that we'll go back.

Pardon my ignorance but while looking at the menu I noticed they serve take out 'Growlers' until 10pm, what is a Growler?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,530 ✭✭✭dub_skav

Popped in last weekend for a few beers and a bite to eat.

Decent enough selection of beers, I like that they have the macros as I have some friends that would be put off going somewhere that doesn't have "their" beer.

Food was okay, not much in the way of dinner as such, more a decent snack type place.

They have an idea what they want to be, maybe they are erring on the side of all things to all men.

All in all a nice addition and bookends Ranelagh nicely from a Craft perspective with McSorley's at the other end.

Oh, and I had a couple of the 400ml size beers and had no issue with pricing.

5.30 for a pint of O'H LF seems good value for Dublin.

I pay 5.00 for a 50cl bottle in the northwest, and that's before the 2014 Budget.

Question - does this mean that O'H Leann Follain is sold on draught in this pub??

Note - they also sell the bottle for 6.00!!!!!

2nd question - this is the only time I have ever seen Guinness FES on a pub menu in Ireland.

Does any other pub sell it?

    what is a Growler?
Not sure of the exact size, but usually a 3-4 pint glass jug. Lots of places do them now: JW Sweetman, L. Mulligan Grocer, Bierhaus in Cork. The Taphouse ones are particularly fancy swingtop ones.

I recall seeing it in Solas on Wexford Street in Dublin some time back.

In what area of Ireland is "Standard" less than a pint?

    Clowns.

That "menu" is all kinds of doublespeak, trying to shoehorn in a non-standard measurement, then calling it standard, then calling a pint "large".

What the hell is actually going on there - they are trying to change the meaning of words.

If I ask for "a Guinness" in there - will they give a "Standard" or a "Large"?

Just looked at their price list, 5.30 a pint is great for the likes of Leann Follain and Metalman, this bit at the top of the list is odd though:

"We recommend the 4OOml Munique Glass for all Draught beverages, with the exception of Guinness, which is best served in a pint." ????!

I'm a pints man myself, why they think 400mls of beer is best (expect Guinness for some reason) is beyond me. I'm still going to give the place a chance though.

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 11,975 Mod ✭✭✭✭BeerNut

In what area of Ireland is "Standard" less than a pint?
The bit of Ranelagh occupied by the Taphouse.

They recommend Guinness by the pint so if you ask for "a" Guinness, I'd say you'll either get a pint or asked what size you want.

(I've only been in once and got bored standing at the bar waiting for someone to ask me what I wanted to drink so left.)

I had a similar experience in Brewdock on Sunday night, except there were four rows of fellows in front of me with similar thoughts.

€5.30 for a pint of Leann Folláin is certainly very attractive. Curim on keg too - not seen too often.

I must say, I would certainly pay €3.70 for a 400ml glass. Sometimes I find the whole pint thing a little heavy going, especially if I want to try lot of different things. It's nice to have the option.

I'd agree. If they had a larger selection, I reckon the 400ml serving would suit me just fine, particularly as you're not paying a premium for it.

Had a couple of very tasty pints (no 400mls for ole Techno) of Metalman there earlier, a bit of a cliched "old library" look to the place but thankfully no TV with poxy Sky Sports on it at least not in the first room beyond the bar as you walk in. Will be back anon.

The owners of The Taphouse are the crowd that own a string of Irish bars in the US called Rí Rá. I've been in one. As an Irish bar, it's OK, but kinda it's a bit theme-parky and soulless. The Taphouse is exactly the same thing in reverse. I didn't like it and found it expensive. The Taphouse makes me feel lucky to have The Headline as my local.

You can get tasty craft beers in the city centre for around a Euro less.

Sweetmans certainly does but most of the established craft beer pubs in the city centre are around the €5 mark or higher these days.

Porterhouse has a €4 pint special every day (although it's not well advertised) and the B&C has €4 pints Mon-Wed, plus Buckley's Ale is €4 all the time.

Pints of metalman for €4 is great value :)

When I visit Central I've got into the habit of going straight to the toilets first, to find out what's on special. €4 Wrassler's on a Saturday seems to be a fixture, which is great.

Specials aside - and I was aware of these - the prices in the Taphouse are in line with or even cheaper than most places in the city centre.

We could add the Gingerman to the list as well - €4 Fran Well pints err day.

B&C's special, while noble, is wasted on me as I'd rarely go for drinks before Thursday during any given week.

Thats what I meant, I was only questioning the guys assertion that the place was "too expensive" which it isnt.I didn't say one couldn't find cheaper by travelling .

You can certainly pay a fiver or more, easily! But you don't have to is my point. Last time I was in Fitzgerald's Galway Hooker was €4.10 a pint which makes it cheaper than my local (that's a few months ago though).

Grabbed a growler of Metalman in the Tap House over the weekend and was very happy with the results.

Filling it is a bit of a production, using what looks like a giant soda stream to accomplish the task.

Nice, fresh, tasty Metalman in my own home for a fiver a pint, 3.50 a pint now that the growler is paid for. Can't complain all in all.

I think the Tap House has a badly balanced selection of draught beers on offer. It basically just has Irish pale ales and red ales, with Guinness and a couple of lagers thrown in as well. It's definitely not a good place to drink if you're looking for variety. They have a 'guest' tap but it has been quite uninspiring whenever I've been there. They're certainly not pushing boundaries. Firmly in my 'meh' category.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,115 ✭✭✭cunnifferous

Yeah been in there a few times, beer selection is better than average, but not great. Plus last few times I've been in there it's been turning into pub/club with really naff spin 103.8ish chart music playing really loudly.
