insulation between and under the rafters

    Hi,

I have started the process of insulating between the rafters, this goes quite well, I'm using 150mm xtratherm boards.

the next step would be installing 50mm xtratherm boards underneath the rafters.

Q: are 2x1'' battens sufficient under the rafters to provide for 1'' services gap and 2'' to provide for the screws?

What type of screws are popular for attaching xtratherm boards directly under the rafters?

I worry that I will drill them to far into the boards, looking for something which will hold the boards but didn't go to deep into the boards.

In other words, how can I install PIR boards underneath rafters with minimal destruction to the boards?
