The Irish Judo Association was pleased to receive an update to the office over the weekend from the International Judo Federation following the African World Cup in Mauritius 9th November 2013. Ireland win three Senior International Medals at the African Open in Mauritius. Gold for Lisa Kearney, Silver for Caoimhin Thompson and Bronze for Eoin Fleming. The gold medal for Lisa adds to her impressive collection at this level but the silver and bronze medals for the two boys are the first won by an Irish male in nearly 20 years at this level. Ciaran Ward was in attendance as their coach. Congratulations to Lisa, Caoimhin, Eoin & Ciaran, the Irish Judo Association wishes them continued success next week when all three compete at the Oceania Open in Apia, Samoa 15th November 2013.

African Open, Mauritius 2013 - DAY ONE

    10th November 2013.

On the tranquil Island of Mauritius there was a buzz of activity at the Swami Vivekananda International Convention Centre in Pailles as the first African Open Championships opened on Saturday with African champions among those in action. Seven weight categories were in action in Mauritius on the opening day as the
    women’s -48kg, 52kg, 57kg and 63kgs graced the tatami alongside the men’s -60kg, 66kg and -73kgs combatants.

During the opening ceremony the Minister of Youth and Sports, Honourable Satyaprakash RITOO said: “over the years the Government of Mauritius has invested
massively in sports and in particular judo” and added that ‘This event will definitely provide a rare opportunity to our local athletes to interact with high level international athletes coming from so many countries. I am sure they will benefit a lot from this competition especially in their preparation for the Island Games in 2015”. In closing the Honourable Minister said: “My special thanks goes to the International Judo Federation for all the assistance provided to Mauritius over the years in terms of equipment and capacity building.”

Being the first African Open Championships, the participating African judoka aimed to bolster their place on the podium in Mauritius wanting to keep the medals on the host continent. This was however not to be the case and the team from Great Britain led the way after winning the majority of the medals on day one.
Ireland are second in the medal table with one gold, one silver and one bronze, with South Africa placed third with one gold, one silver and a fifth place. The surprise of the day was the performance from Nigeria in fourth place with a gold and bronze medal. Hosts Mauritius won five bronze medals and occupy tenth place on the medal table and will hope for more on day two.
