Accommodation Problem

    Hi everyone,

I am currently a leaving cert student and I was just wondering if some of you could answer a question for me about accommodation?

    I just have one question,

Will I have to pay the first half of the rent even if I haven't gotten my grant through yet? Would you be allowed a waiver to pay until your grant comes through or will you have to pay if you have it or not?

Any replies or answers would be HUGELY appreciated.

    Thank you :)

I think it has to be paid all at once. There's serious competition for places in Halls, and they just want to get their money as fast as possible.

There's no guarantee you'll get halls in any case, no matter where you're from, this year international students as well as students from far out the country were rejected and students from Dublin and Kildare got in.

Maybe just try and give them an email and see what they say ? The email should be on the halls part of the tcd website

Thanks so much for getting back to me, I appreciate it :) Yeah, I sent them an e-mail so we'll see what it says.

Hi I was in the same position as yourself and am regretting putting trinity first. I didn't get halls even though people from blackrock got in which is extremely out of line, I'm left commuting 2 hours to dublin and 2 hours home every day. College is definitely disappointing. Also the grant pays €400-500 every month and you grt your first payment in October so you will have to get a loan either way...

AIB offer interest free overdrafts for anyone with a third level student account, I think other banks offer the same deal. As long as you can prove you've been accepted to TCD, you can set up an account and apply for the overdraft. As long as it's repaid within a year or so it's cheaper than a loan and can take less or the same amount of time to process.

Wow 2 hours there and back sounds dreadful! :( does Trinity not do any other accommodation for first years?

See that's the main problem, what if I don't get halls? and I don't live in Dublin so I probably won't :/ wow 2 hours there and back sounds dreadful! :( does Trinity not do any other accommodation for first years?

Don't let getting halls be your decision maker. There's plenty of student accommodation in Dublin, most of which are closer and cheaper than halls.
That said, if you do get a place, it's a great start to year and you'll know a few people before the year begins.

If you don't get halls, it would be a good idea to consider renting a place with a few people you know also going to college. If you don't know anyone then you could try to find people to rent with via the Students' Union, but that's chancier.

Halls isn't the be-all and end-all. It just makes life easier.

The Accommodation Office in TCD will give consideration in relation to the scheduling of the payment of residential charges where a reasonable case is made. Normally, some supporting information would be required. This would usually be agreed after a room has been allocated.
Email your details to residences@tcd.ie and trinity.hall@tcd.ie

I'm in first year and I didn't get Halls (I'm from Donegal). It was a bummer at first but I managed to get digs across the road, so I spend most of my time there with my friends and its really handy for getting taxis on nights out etc. You can also try NCI and other places too, i really really would not rely solely on Halls.

Most of the accommodation in Dublin used by TCD students is closer and cheaper than Halls, and that's even without considering the fact that your travel expenses in Halls will be higher than for somewhere closer. The only upside is the social side IMO.
