Do you know of any simple and effective trip planning websites? I tried Travelomatic and TripIt but they don't appeal to me. The latter is almost good, but I can't find any report with total cost in it.

    Any ideas?

Have you tried Alpha Rooms? or what I do is plan my flights using skyscanner (then book direct on the website) and then use trivago for planning my hotel.
