Why does pleading guilty to a crime result in a reduced sentence? Almost every TV show has a scene where a guilty plea will mean less time in prison..

I don't really get it.. It forces people with a weak defense to accept instead of fight.

    Surely this is self evident?

It saves everyone a shed load of hassle. Caught red handed? Don't bother with your rubbish lies.

i guess it would be the Cost of the trial if it were to drag on plus Not putting someone onto the witness stand if its an emotional case (say rape the person wouldn't have to go through the horror of questioning)

Trying to cover your tracks and get out of it, is seen as a worse off thing to do, then admitting what you did and taking the punishment.

Well, in the movies, it's always teased that you'll get a lighter sentence if you help us catch the other more powerful guy you've worked with.

Doubt that'd be the primary use for it. Guilty plea's are probably met with lighter sentencing as a "reward" for admission of guilt and a recognition of it.

Would the reasoning for lighter sentences not be made, when sentencing is presented by the Judge?

I get it but what about a girl accusing me of rape and my chances in court aren't great because of no real evidence either way.. Plead guilty - 5 years. Fight it - 10 years.

Very hard to equate the value of effort and cost to years in prison. Pretty much the only time false accusations are brought to light is when the person decides to fight it.
