    Hi all

Excuse my ignorance but I'm not great with technology!

I have iPhone 4S for last couple years, never really bothered with updating it etc.

When I plug my iPhone into laptop to update it, it won't let me it says "the iPhone software server could not be contacted"

When I go into Settings-General- the Software update option is not there. How do I get it if when I'm in iTunes it won't let me download iOS 5 without that option.

Please help as I'm fit to throw my phone out the window.
The version I have at the moment is 4.3 (8F190)

I would really appreciate if anyone could help.

Well the latest update is iOS 7.0.3, so you'll be going onto that, I would assume.

It could be your anti-virus/firewall stopping the server from being contacted. You could always try disabling it for a bit just to see (obviously that means you will be unprotected, so proceed at your own risk).

Equally it could be your hosts file: http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1814

Or if all of that fails you could download the file from a site like this: http://www.iphonehacks.com/2013/10/download-ios-7-0-3.html and do a manual update (process described here: http://osxdaily.com/2010/11/23/how-to-use-ipsw-files/)

    Thanks for reply.

I think my anti virus etc ok it's not saying that is the problem.

I know the latest software is the iOS 7 I have heard bad things about it from others. Tried downloading it with the link you sent it wont let me.
Even if I got to iOS 6 that would be great.

The problem I have is not having the software update option when I go into settings - general.

    Anyone else any suggestions

I was trying to download an app there and a prompt came up on screen that I need iOS 6 to download it..when I clicked continue it said 'cannot connect to iTunes' even thou I have Wifi on & ITunes.

Is there anyone I can bring the phone to have a look, Vodafone weren't that interested. I live in the North West.

There's obviously a problem with your connection if it's failing even trying from other sites. Go through the steps advised above.

Bear in mind you can't choose what you update to. You can only go to the latest one which is 7.0.3

Probably jailbroken at some stage. Apple hate that.

Download from the above link and in itunes press shift as you click update to locate the downloaded file

Didn't that setting only get introduced with iOS 5 or 6?

Before you do a manual update, make sure you backup your iPhone in iTunes if you don't want to lose your data..
