Exhaust leaking from waste gate actuator on turbo

    there's a small exhaust leak where the actuator passes through the body of the turbo. Can this be fixed, or am i looking at new/refurb'd turbo?

    Car is 06 Corolla, D4D

    top left hand image, the mechanism dead center, very bottom of the image.

    it's leaking around the bottom of the actuator, near that nut with the blu locking "glue"

    I cannot edit and post a picture on this machine,

    Just to be sure it's coming from the compressor side, yes?

    The left has the wastegate actuator itself, the right has a banjo bolt where it takes it's sample from. Which one is leaking? Are you sure it's leaking? That would mean it could be overboosting....

    I haven't seen it myself, I'll check with the mechanic who told me.

    It's boosting fine, doesn't seem to be any reduction in MPG or driving.

    You can feel the leak, if you keep a hand near the turbo, and I've been told there's some soot near the leak.

    Hi dgt,
    the leak is occurring where the shaft rotated by the actuator actually passes through the body of the turbo. Is there a bushing or bearing of some sorts on that shaft.

    So in first image, it's rod to the left of the nut with the blue locking cement on the bottom of the turbo.

    a ping for good luck

    anyone know if it's possible to repair a leak around the waste gate shaft, or am I looking at a full refurb/replacement turbo?

    Sorry about that, I'm very busy recently! :o

    If that's leaking where you say it's leaking, I'd hunt for a knackered turbo from the same engine and swap the housings. Not too difficult to do but use new bolts (preferably buy a service kit and do the lot, not too difficult to rebuild a turbo). Otherwise it's a recon unit :( I'm in a similar position with a K03, I need to helicoil one of the bolts to hold the clamp in or it will just shoot the bolt out :eek:

    On older indirect diesels you could weld/bolt the wastegate shut and control boost through fuelling, thus you could weld up the arm too. But as it's a modern common rail car this isn't an option and that method is quite frowned upon

    I'll be getting someone else to do the oily bits, I'm a computer person, it's not considered safe to let me near something that rev's as high as a turbo :-)

    is it worthwhile getting the turbo refurb'd since it's out of the car? car's a 2006 with 140K miles on it
