Buying a 2014 car - negotiation?

    Hi all,

I want to order a 2014 car this week. I have costs from a local dealer. I didn't try and bargain with him, he gave me the figures and I told him I would think about it over the weekend. How do I go about negotiating? I'm trading in a car against the new car so do I try to get more than he is offering for that? Or is there leeway for him to discount the 'on the road' price of the new one?

    Thanks!

Go to another dealer and get a price and see how it compares. You have to shop around.

Thats exactly what my dad said also!! Gonna try another dealership tomorrow. There are only two dealerships nearby for what I want and I don't have the time nor the inclination to travel further. Surely there won't be much between them? I would have thought that they would all be in around the same price?

You'd be surprised. I shopped the country for my car. Emailed all the dealers to see who would give me the best offer.
Ended up travelling over 2.5 hours to buy the car.

I thought they would be reluctant to give figures over ye phone and email and that they would have to see the car I'm trading in person? It must have been really worth your while to travel 2.5 hrs, how much was in the difference?!! I have a small baby so I can't be travelling far.

You will not get any prices over the phone or by email especially if you have a car to trade in. If you want the best deal then you have to be sitting in front of the dealer and you can negotiate on the price as the dealer will expect some haggling so his first price will have some fat in it. How much you get off his price will depend on how good a haggler you are and how much profit the dealer thinks he can make from selling your trade-in for. If you are not good at haggling then I suggest bringing someone with you who is familiar with buying cars.

Thanks, that is what I thought too re phone/email prices. I will visit another dealership tomorrow and hope that I can play one off the other. So should I be haggling to get the new car at a better price or more for my own?

You should haggle on what the cost to change is for the same car.

No problem giving me figures over email, this is the tech age in fairness ;)
I had a wife who was 4 days from giving birth, but money is money is money :D

I had no trade in though in fairness, so the situation is different, but if you spotted a car which you really liked, buzz the garage and have a chat, if you think its worth a look and you can work a price why limit yourself to home prices?
As the stunning Mary Harney said "Shop around", she did and look at her (she did eat some of the shops though) :D

What are you buying, and what are you trading in?

With a trade in, you need to give the garage a look at the car in the flesh if they're gonna do a not so profitable deal. When I was selling cars there was no way I'd go balls out on a deal if it was by email, even with no trade in involved. It was always gonna be the garage who made a mistake that would get the deal in my opinion.

I bought a car in August and in one week got the discount up from 2% to 14.6%. It was worth the time it took (about 4 hours) to save approx €2100 off. I emailed every dealer and most of them gave me a price via email, some wanted a visit to the showroom but I ruled that out and said I needed their best price by e-mail. Nobody has the time or patience to call to every dealer, so e-mail really worked. All of the dealers are businesses and are willing to cut the prices to get the deals; dealerships in the same chain gave me different prices. I didn't trade-in my previous car, went for a straight deal. A little bit more hassle will really pay off.
