I know i have to wear (hire) the gown and thats fine but on the letter it also stated that we should wear black or white or combination of both. I'm curious as to how strict they are about this? (seeing as we wear the gowns for the ceremony).

Ive a dress thats black but has flowers on it (red and white) would I get away with it? Really dont want to have to buy something for it if i don't have to!

Just look at friends who are graduating and see what they have gone with. From the photos on my facebook feed it looks like the girls all go with black and white, no colours. However, patterns seem perfectly acceptable.

As for not wanting to buy a new dress: this will most likely be a once in a lifetime occasion. Surely this merits forking out for a simply black dress, which I assume (being male) could be found at a fairly reasonable price, or even borrowed from a friend?

My graduation was last week - if the red flowers are big or bright, you'll really stand out because everyone wore either black or white (or something with simple black & white patterns). One girl had a coloured cardigan under her gown which was visible at the back and it was really, really noticeable when she stood on stage to get her degree.

I don't know if they'd turn you away or not, but I think pretty much everyone sticks to the black-and-white-only rule. The gown covers a lot, but it doesn't close at the front; your dress will be partially visible.
