Jump start a diesel from a petrol advice

    Hi All,

I have done some reading on this but cannot seem to get a definitive answer.
Have a 1.8TDI which will not start for some reason. Don't have access to a similar sized diesel to jump start it off at the moment - only have a 1.4 petrol.

Diesel cars battery is 12v and fairly large as expected - but not sure what the petrol one is as there is no sticker on it (maybe they are all the same?) but the physical size is almost half of the diesel.

Can I jump the diesel off the petrol?

    Thanks

I jump started a Hino cement lorrey with a 1.2 Bravo once.

Hope that clears any doubts you have

I jumped a dead Opel Combo with my half dead Almera once, no issue!

I had a laguna 1.9 diesel and jump started it from a 1.0 micra.

Hooked up jump leads and increased the rev of micra for a few mins to transfer a charge into laguna battery. With leads still connected started laguna.

As long as they are both 12V no problem.
However some jump leads can be very light and in this case the best plan is to hook up the leads and then let the petrol car charge the diesel battery for 10 mins or so ; then try to start .
If the diesel battery is very low and you try to start immediately after hooking up the leads you may find it doesn't work - the 'dead' battery will drag down the good battery a bit .
Also when attempting to start don't operate the starter for more that 10 secs or so each time ; and leave time between attempts for batteries to recover .
