Q's on Multimedia

Alright guys, hopefully a few multimedia students lingering around boards!

I'm currently studying a course in UCD as a back route into Vet Med, however I can't stand my course. I find it awfully boring and I don't want to pursue this degree without being 100% on if I actually do want to do Vet Med and if I actually will have the 80k for it all. The course which Im doing isn't very good career wise and isn't really something I'd like to stay in.

I'm considering reapplying to the CAO and putting multimedia down as my first choice. Every since I was younger I was interested in PR, photography, marketing, filmography and was even considering going to do Graphic Design in IADT/NCAD. It seems that all these interests are integrated into the Multimedia course so hopefully it would be good for me. My question is, those of yous who are studying it already, how do you find the course? What are it's weaknesses? Would you recommend it to your friends? Do you know anyone who has actually gone on to get a good job with this degree?

And although there are no opportunities to study abroad, is there a way to do a masters abroad? I put Creative Industries DIT down on my CAO last year and found a few masters programs for it in the UK but I am unsure if I could do these too with the multimedia course.

What made you choose the course you are doing at the moment if you are interested in graphic design/PR/communications etc.?

Just asking this question before I give insight on the multimedia course as I'd like to get a feel for why you want to change direction

Hi, I'm 2nd year Multimedia. Don't worry about the technical aspect at all, you don't need to have any previous experience in this stuff. Everything you learn on the course will be from the basics up. Most of us, myself included, were complete beginners in the software. It's good that you're creative, because that's really the main thing you need to be.

I'm a second year Multimedia student myself - and a mature, the interview was them just getting a feel for me, what I liked and what I wanted or why I wanted it. It's a smarter process than just looking for LC points they make sure they take on people who want to be there so just stress that in the interview.

Some off-field questions like having to use resources like Books and software that may be outdated with e Books and such and also the willingness to work with and alongside 18 year olds who have no previous college experience.

Great thanks for your help could any of you guys recommend similar courses as I need to put down similar options too - I would like to know about the thesis in the last year. I was sure that there was an option to work in the last year but they have taken that away I see. What sort of projects do people do for the thesis and what is the word count. Thanks again guys you're so helpful.

Once upon a time this was a 4 year course and included an internship, but those days are gone. You spend pretty much all of third year focusing on the final year project, and there are no classes in the last semester to allow you to work solely on it.
People did all sorts or projects, I did a music video, some did websites, series of videos, interactive projects. Its really open, and all the previous years thesis's are in the library for other students to get a feel of whats been done. The production thesis is in two parts, the production log, and a sort of literature review. You need to have a sort of question, or objective your going to answer during the course of making your project. Mine was about how 'we aimed to develop an emotionally engaging short film with a visually conveyed narrative using an original song as both the influence and the soundtrack'.

Some people did also do a solo thesis, as opposed to a group production thesis. This didn't require them to make anything, but had to more independent research, many doing surveys and focus groups and such, and had a longer work-count.
