Wasn't 100% sure on where to put this. I'm looking to buy peat - but not for heating/dried up. I'm looking for the sludgy stuff. I'm not sure what it's called or where to look. When I contact some people on donedeal who are selling pete - they don't seem to know or get what I'm asking. Am I crazy?!!?

I'm looking to strain all the bits out of it and send it off to my Aunt abroad. She used to use the stuff as a kid as a facemask and soften up here eczema. So as a present for xmas - that is my plan. I don't mind having to buy a load of it - as I know it will be used!

Thanks - and sorry in advance if this is the wrong section.

John Kenny (former Offaly footballer) is involved in a product made of peat. Check it out

    http://www.ograskincare.com/products-page/body-care/peat-face-and-body-mask/

I often came off the bog looking like I was wearing a "Peat face and body mask" . It aint too cheap I see.
Maybe send your aunt a sod of turf and tell her to soak it in water before she applies it :-)

Is your aunt still suffering from eczema :D

Jeez, never even thought you could actually buy it like that! 40 euro for 50ml?! I'm pretty sure we paid 130/tonne for dried peat a few years back. I guess if I can't find the stuff in bulk, that's the way to go :(

No she doesn't suffer from it anymore but her kids do. So this was going to be a bit of a nostalgia gift, as she always goes on about it.

200 litres of peat in the local hardware for 7 euro yesterday. You'd make a lot of face masks with 200 l

Hey reilig, dare I ask where this hardware store is? 7 euro for 200l is a lot less than I had planned for.

Where are you based ringdingdong ? Could you not get a bucket or bowl of it from a neighbour out of a bog or drain ?

Based in Dublin-but wouldn't mind travelling a bit for it. So if I called up a place - do i ask for Bog Mud?

Thanks for all the replies so far, very much appreciated.

What do people use that for other than face masks?

I'm not 100% sure on their markets, but I think a lot of it goes to mushroom production.

    Hi
Assuming that you're serious OP.& based in Dublin, why not take a drive up the Wicklow mountains armed with a spade and some plastic containers / buckets. Remove the top 300mm layer off approx. 1 square meter off the bog to get to the peat, cut this in small portions and fill into containers Job done. To make a paste suitable for face mask etc. just add water ! To keep peat moist store in a sealed conatiner or plastic bag with some water.
Paying for a tiny amount of peat in this form is just silly, like an Eskimo paying for a fistful of snow !

I think I'd be too worried about stealing to be honest. If I could atleast knock on someones door and explain it to them, then I'd feel a bit better about it. (Plus I wouldn't even know where to look - or what I'm looking for). It all looks like fields to me!

I see potted heather for sale at the local flower show €8-10/pot, 10 miles away there are acres of heather free to take away:)

    Hi,
I'm not suggesting that you break the law.......If you helped yourself to a gallon of Dublin bay sea water, would you consider that stealing ?:D
After removing the peat just put back the top layer again and it will grow back. The bog regenerates itself over time.
