Setting permissions on linux

Guys quick question. I'm trying to change my file permissions on a shell script I wrote but I'm getting an error. the command I ran was : chmod u+e add.sh I'm getting this error message - chmod: Invalid file mode: u+e I can change the read and write permissions but not the execute permission Anyone have any suggestions

You're using the wrong letter for execute permissions, you want to use 'x', not 'e':

chmod u+x add.sh
