Disappointed to find the Android Remote Desktop client doesn't work with Windows 7 Home Premium edition.

I've used Logmein before, but the Android client costs almost €30.

Anyone of a decent secure alternative, preferably with wake on LAN capabilities?

    Teamviewer?
ditto, you really can't beat it imho. :)

the only downside being that it only works on non-server OS's so no free version for win 2003 or 2008 etc. just xp, vista, win7 & win8.

Actually use splash top more. It tends to work better with unusual phone / screen resolutions.

Could install a VPN client on your PC and connect to it via one of the many VPN apps on Google Play.

TeamViewer / SplashTop are good options too.
