When you say second hand, do you mean vintage.
Don't think you will get a modern Omega for €500 to easily

Maybe have a look at O'Reilly's Auction houses, and a few jewellers that sell second hand watches such a couple in Powerscourt Townhouse and Dawson Jewellers, if you are in Dublin.

Definitely looks like a vintage one with that budget, and I think you're more likely to find an Omega if the automatic part is important. You'll easily get a newer Tag F1 or Professional within budget if you go with a quartz though.

Are there any particular styles you're looking for, or is it more the brand? Any Omegas in budget will most likely look quite dressy, and probably be relatively small by today's standards. There are some nice square faced models which tend to wear a little bigger than round ones.

Thanks, yeah it was a vintage Omega I meant. Had seen one on here recently for sale and that got me thinking about them.

Went and looked at a couple of different watches in the flesh today, and decided that I think what I really want is a Tag Carrera, along the lines of this http://www.adverts.ie/mens-watches/tag-heuer-carrera-watch-cv2010-ba0786/3263710. Not going to get that for my budget, so will probably postpone purchase for a while and keep an eye out for a good second-hand one, while I get a bit more cash together.

Take a look at the catalogue for the upcoming O'Reilly auction, there is a very similar one there, with a guide of an awful lot less than that. I don't think that TAG Heuer watches hold their value that well (compared to Omega/Rolex/Panerai) and so might be best to look for one second hand alright.

If you like that look, then an Omega Speedmaster could be an option. This one is going for 1100.

Thanks, that looks really good. I don't really have an experience of buying at auctions, is it generally realistic to get something for in and around the guide price, or can it fluctuate a lot?

Thanks, that looks really good actually. Definitely one to be considered.

The guide price is always a rough one. Some auctioners make them low to generate interest I. The hope of a bidding war. Others set them high in the hope of setting a high expectation. And others tend to get it right.
Ultimatley all that matters is the min bid price and the people bidding on the item.
The same item can get two very different prices at different auctions.

A lot depends on whether there is anyone else there who wants the watch. I presume that you could phone them with a min and max bid - remember to add in the auctioneers commission though

Stupid question but what the diff between auto and quartz?

Essentially a quartz watch is battery powered, an automatic watch is a mechanical watch which is powered by the movement of your wrist (which causes a rotor to move and wind the spring) as opposed to a handwound watch which is mechanical but has no rotor and needs to be handwound.

    Quartz Movement:

    Automatic Movement:

    Handwound movement:

As you can probably guess from the photos, quartz movements are generally quite cheap. Most mechanical watches are automatic, for convenience, but a handwound movement is often nicer to look at (no rotor blocking the view) and can also be slimmer.
